Took Malaga E9 car "The Queen Mother" for a long drive today to celebrate spring, went through 2 tanks of gas. When I filled up, at least a gallon of gas was dumped on the apron at the gas station from the overflow. Never had this happen before. Do I blame the gas nozzle shutoff? Or is something else going on? I did not "top up", I just let the nozzle shut off and then I smelled gas which was POURING out of the undercarriage in front of the left rear wheel.

Another strange thing: after moderately hard braking on a congested highway, my brakes seemed to be dragging, as in retarding the car from rolling normally without any pedal pressure. My brake fluid warning light had been flashing intermittently so I filled up the reservoir, and after I did that I noticed this problem. It seemed to resolve itself at highway speed, it was only noticeable in stop and go. Does my MC pushrod need adjustment after all these years? Or am I imagining things? Simultaneously, I noted some pulsing under braking that felt like warpage in my rotors. Rotors don't warp when a car is put up for the winter. Or do they?

And finally, my indicator dashboard flasher has not worked for some time, even though the turn signal lights do work. I understand this is a common problem having to do with the relay and the grounds, and have bought the aftermarket bits to circumvent it. Have not installed that fix yet. But, setting out early, I had my running lights on and when I cranked up the dash lights to full bright, my dashboard flasher came on and stayed on even though my stalk was in the neutral position. Now I am wondering whether I switched the lamp positions when I rebuilt my speedo. Or is this normal?

And one final thing: my AC works! But my AC fan switch seems to have one setting, on or off. When on, the fan seems to run at two speeds and it switches between them automatically. And at both speeds, it's very noisy. Is this normal? Do I need a new fan? New fan switch?

So did fuel come out the filler? if so, it was a failure of the pump. If not. Your fuel filler boot may be compromised or there's a leak in your tank when full.

Sounds like your flexible rubber brake hoses need to be replaced. When was the last time they were replaced & the brake fluid flushed. If you aren't able to remember. Change all the rubber lines & flush & bleed the system.

Not normal, something is amiss.

How noisy is noisy? Is it squealing like a bearing is bad? Is it just noisy from moving air? Older AC in these cars is primitive by modern standards.

Regarding your flasher on dash. I think you're seeing light bleed from the running lights. Wait till your flasher relay is installed, it will probably be much brighter.

No fuel came out of filler ... but I forgot to mention I removed fuel filler rubber boot as I am in the process of replacing/repainting my fuel door.

And fan noise is not squeaky, its almost as if the fan is brushing against something.

The green flasher indicator light never flashes, but comes on and stays on (not flashing) when my running lights are on and the dash rheostat is cranked all the way up. I did try to clean up the grounds at each corner.

+1 on having fresh flexible brake lines.

You might also have sticky caliper piston(s). I have one on my E9 and it causes one brake disc to “drag” for a while after each moderate-hard brake application. After a drive that wheel is always a bit warmer than the other three. This is not uncommon on old cars that sit for long periods of time.

Looked at fuel filler boot there is a hose that goes to a plastic vapor tank and that's intact. The leak was coming from somewhere down low on the left side of the car, and the stream gave the appearance that is was coming out of a circa 10mm hose. Is there an overflow on these tanks?

I am thinking the flasher lamp and one of the illumination lamps got switched around when I redid the speedo. And then the normal relay problem. Plus the cancel functionality is gone so without the idiot light, I drive for miles like an idiot with my blinkers on.

Gas tank is on the right/passenger side.

But you are dumping fuel on the left/driver side??

I would check the fuel lines (which run across to the left side of the trunk, down and forward. You might have a rusty hard line, a perished/leaking flexible line or a weak connection. Is yours a CS or CSI?

If you remove the wood trunk board you can see part of the fuel line routing. For the rest you’ll have to get underneath

John

Hard to imagine but if enough fuel spilled out into the trunk. Some could’ve ended up on the driver side

If fuel is on driver side of car the fuel lines cross over to that side and run up next to the rocker. Do you have a CS or CSi? I don’t see how you could get a gallon of gas to pour out there however, perhaps tank has a split in the seam? Add vehicle info to your signature.

Edit: John, we think alike!

and I might add that the PO had a (noisy) electric pump installed in the rear trunk so the mechanic who did it (I think it was that BMW ..place in Tucson) may have disconnected the breather or some other part of the plumbing ... but this was done before I bought it so why the problem now? It's a US 74 CS with a later motor and a manual tranny. The fuel only leaked for a couple minutes then stopped, so it definitely coming out of the plumbing that comes out of the top of the tank. I will get her up on jack stands and take a look. I suspect the return line is unhooked somehow.

If you had a strong gas smell in the trunk, I would check under the trunk boards in case the hose connection at the pickup (or leaking around the pickup itself). If yes, filling it really full could force gas out the top,

Wow- you live in the middle of ? Texas!

you might consider a visit to Peter in Austin or I have a tech heading to Dallas in a month or so.

Walloth had a great deal on fresh calipers lately…
maybe use a laser pointer pyrometer to see which rotors are getting hot.

2002turbo, I would get a good mechanic to look at this PDQ, whilst you still have a car.
The sticking caliper is the wheel or wheels with the most brake dust on them. But always more on the front wheels than rear. Or just touch the wheels after driving it to that good mechanics place, unless he will come to you. The hottest is sticking.
That level of fuel leak sounds like a fire risk
Let us know when it is fixed, my guess is new fluid, new calipers, new hoses, new fuel pipes and that fuel breather re-attached.

“Or just touch the wheels after driving it”

much smarter than me- I once reached in and touched the rotor…..

ouch

OK well after a driving hiatus I made appt and took car to local brake shop. Brakes were binding at low speeds. Said shop did not respect appt so I brought car home, and used my temp gun to ascertain it was the front left that was getting hot (over 600 on the rotor itself, yikes). Took all apart, bled that caliper (reservoir was near full), found rotor was .864 above min but had slight warpage, plus one piston sticky. But while I was at it, I of course found more stuff:

1. Pads looked OK, plenty left, but wafers that go between the pads and the pistons in the caliper were disintegrating. I suspect you can't get these without buying new pads. Is it OK to omit them? I have never seen this on any other make of car.
2. Suspension and joints/bearings etc seem tight. But lower ball joint rubber is split. Trying to get this apart but they don't exactly make it easy. The third ball joint nut is hard to access. Got the castellated nut loose but that's as far as I can go. Soaked in PB blaster overnight. No response to small hammer/punch. Probably need some kind of splitter but which one? Or some other trick? And where to get new ball joint or even just the rubber? I checked the obvious sources. Can't even find a pair of wishbones.
3. I was able to unstick piston with a piece of hardwood but wondering whether I need to go further ie rebuild caliper. No sign of leaks.
4. Have not got to gas tank yet. I have looked under floor boards, it's definitely a hose connection of some sort on the left side of car near left rear wheel, but my axle stands are under another car right now so I can't get under the back of the car. Probably just going to take it to the shop when I get the brake done. Hoping that's just some rubber hose issue.

Stuck caliper: if you drive the car regularly, you just might get away with freeing up the stuck piston then working it in/out a bunch of times. Sometimes this dislodges enough corrosion that it won’t stick again unless left to sit for a substantial period.
