if you trace it out on a thick / stiff paper - like brown craft paper, you can then do test fits for the 'bound' pieces. the standard cut pieces go in first anyway. after that you can refine the test fits for the critical pieces before you cut the carpet

Newbie question sorry.

is there something wrong with the sources in the FAQ’s that people are making their own?

Prices don’t seem that bad.

In my case, I save about $400. The raw square weave carpet material was about $600, yes expensive and I still had to sew on the binding. The same company wanted almost $1000 for a square weave set. Of course square weave is much more expensive than the German or American loop the vendors sell. Personal choice with me with the square weave.

Not sure what an upholstery shop would charge to sew on the binding if one can't do it themselves. But I doubt it would be $400.
