I'd appreciate input on how to evaluate rust on this hood of a car I saw. No sign of rust on top of hood.
Thanks,
Paul

It looks serious. If those are the only bad spots on the hood then a good body man can peel up the edges and replace (ie cut out the bad stuff and replace with new metal) the rusted out frame sections. It looks a little tricky to bend the new metal to that shape. If the rest of the hood is in similar condition, then maybe find a good used hood instead.

Thanks for the input! I've not made the purchase. It's a very pretty and original CSI, but, yes, rust here and worrisome rockers.

Rusty Hood

Having just finished removing all skins on my CS down to a bear shell I recommend investigating further directly below that part of the hood in the fender area. If the underside of the hood looks like that it points to further troubles in more susceptible areas. ie fender cavities and rockers.
My Rockers actually rusted from the inside out due to rust/rot at the base of the A post which resulted in water/mud entry into the rocker.
As more experienced members will confirm visible rust is only 1/10 of the rust hidden below in most cases.

Good luck

It seems like you have already been seduced by a very pretty car (almost everyone in this group understands) but instead of showing photos to us you should be showing the photos to the good body man that you have in mind for this project. Maybe it’s just over his head or he’s just not in a position to give up the large amount of time needed for such a major restoration. ~ John Buchtenkirch
