Hello all,

A question that I am sure has been asked here before, but I had no luck searching....

Scored an old matching pair of 6 digit CA blue plates (last tag on 'em: '94) and am curious if they are at all possible able to use on the car or are they just to slap on for a 'static display' somewhere.

My car is a 1970 and I think a blue plate would be neat.

thx

Shanon,

You are out of luck, DMV only allows up through 1969 with a Black Plate. Maybe someday though so hang onto them. PM also sent.

What about BLUE plates? I think you can use them if the number has not been taken.
But, what do I know, I am from NH

Blue Plates

I've heard that if you can show that the plates were originally licensed to your car at some point you can use them. Still, probably not an easy process at the CA DMV.

DMV is very strict on switching to old plates even on 69 or earlier cars. You need a matching pair, they must be cleared by DMV (not stolen, not used by someone else, etc.), must be in decent condition, must be Era correct for the year of the vehicle and they have to have a tag (year) the same year as the model year of the car you want to put it on. There may be other requirements also.

I don't think they are doing this with Blue plates yet since this can only be done on cars up to 69 and trucks to 72, as far as I know. They just opened it up to cars from 63 to 69 in 2009. Before that is was only for vehicles up to 63. If you wait long enough they may open it up for later model cars.

Yes, I believe that is true. But you must bring in the documentation (typically an old registration). The DMV doesn't have any back records - or at least, they claim that they don't.

From experience, I can tell you that the DMV will allow you to register blue vanity plates. Now what constitutes "vanity" and what is just considered a generic plate is anyone's call. I suppose you could walk in and say that "123 ABC" means something to you.

Chris, I am in Huntington Beach through tomorrow evening. Is the NK drivable? I brought my driving shoes and I have never driven one of those.

Would the DMV accept a plate with the word "Vanity" as a Vanity plate?
Vanitas Vanitatum said the preacher in Ἐκκλησιαστής.
