Is there a way to know what grills were supposed to be on a certain year or model?

This is the VIN 4310220 of a friends (not a forum person) 74 CS and it is Agave with black grills, hood and side.
Was this the original finish for this model?

Thanks,
Gary

I prefer the look of chrome hood and side grills on dark colors cars (1971 2800CS):

Wow, I just changed my opinion on black painted coupes, that car looks beautiful.

On the 74 Agave, I hear that based on the year it would have had black grills from the factory.

Arde,

Thanks, took her out last Sunday for what I think will be the last drive
till next Spring. Woke up to 2 inches of snow this morning...

Thanks Andrew and others.

Think that clarifies it.
Missed that other discussion.

I do agree with dark and light discussion about which looks best on the different colors.

My coupe is dark blue and has chrome grills and looks good.

Thanks,
Gary

Painted black you can always find your car in the snow, and my pseudo science says that oxidation rate slows down with lower temperature, oh I forgot your business of putting salt on the roads instead of the food... Come to California, I am building a spec house I will be happy to sell you :).

In looking at a couple of grilles that recently found their way to me (thanks Scott) ... the outer surface is satin and the remaining surface is matte. not all polished chrome like the new ones. looks kind of like this picture, but not black and chrome

This is a metal set reproduced by vranedom for his restoration some time back. I think he offered out some sets at the time and I don't know why I wouldn't have grabbed a set, but didn't. Doh.

Anyway, maybe I'm mistaken, but it seems to me that if the fabrication knowledge could be outsourced to someone in the business of reproduction, that there would be some market for these now.

I know I would prefer these to either black or chrome plastic.

Maybe vranedom will chime in here regarding current status of these very nice looking grilles.
