Need advice

Going to look at 2800 that is one owner , father /son 82000 miles no rust that can be seen from pictures, paint and interior three years old . new hoses, brakes ,tires, looks almost to good. What areas do I really need to look at? price is around 16,000.00. Any help appreciated. Car is seven hours from me.

Look at the tech section of this site at the rust prone areas section, all you need to know is there.

why not have a qualified shop look it over before you drive 7 hours. Look for a shop here: http://www.bimrs.org
 
The quick version:

tops of fenders in engine compartment, over the wheel wells and under/around the sound insulation

behind the front wheels up in the fender is a small pocket, reach your hand up there and see what you find, also look with a flashlight.

directly behind the front wheels at the beginning of the rocker

open the hood latch and glove box doors and shine a light up in there to check metal condtition

bring a small phillips screwdriver and if the owner will let you take the rocker covers off this will show a lot.

pull up front carpets to check floors

check spare tire compartment

check rear shock mounts

I'd guess The open market value of a 2800 with a proper 3yr old resto to be $30k - $45k.
So, congrats but be careful. Strongly suggest you hire an experienced E9 professional (someone who has restored E9s ) to assist you. Shiny new paint isnt always good psint, etc. Spending $250 for a couple hours now could be well worth it if this car has significant issues.

Wow, seven hours one way. We don't have that problem here, but a car that's only 30 miles away can cost a $100 (one way) plane ride plus a rental car at the other end. I'm not as pessimistic as some here, but a thorough look at the suspect areas mentioned is certainly in order. Lotsa luck, lot us know how it turns out.
 
Vin # 2270215 ,if anyone knows anything about car. Found it in the registry. Anyone know someone in the Pittsburg Penn. area who can check this car out for a fee?

I will not be purchasing this car. Hope someone closer has better luck. I will still be on the prowl.
 
I purchased the car in PA in January, and just this weekend got to see it and drive it. Wow, this car was not too good to be true. The paint is good. Not perfect, but very nice-- there are imperfections, but I didn't pay a show car price-- it was repainted in 2005. Solid car, very little rust, some minor bubbles, which I am having taken care of and some surface rust in spare wheel well. Very minimal, very solid. Just fun and awesome to drive. Took it on a bunch of twisties and I had a grin on my face the whole time. 65MPH at 2800 RPM and it was great. I think I could drive it home (300miles) without any issue. Alas, it still needs to stay in PA while I have some more work done this week and then home hopefully in May. Interior is great too.
