Noise when accelerating, goes when dipping the clutch

Expensive, yes, but you know what they say....

"Do it once and do it right"

Another way to look at it is £2120 / 100,000 miles = just over 2 pence a mile...cheap! :)

£1600 to remove and replace a gearbox that they had to send away to get done? I would have gone mental at them! At least it's sorted......

I knew they have a specialist they outsource this sort of thing to. I wouldn't have had the resources and confidence to pull the tranny myself and courier it some place. Plus I wanted them to inspect the clutch and change if necessary. The final bill was £1k more than I was expecting and I'm dubious as to whether it really needed all that work. Also, they had it for ages so I was forced to chase them. But what was I to do? They had me over a barrel.

In the situation you were in I sure I would have done similar - several of the big names have done it to me in the past! It just saddens me when 'specialist' companies overcharge for work that even a main dealer would charge a lot less for. It takes some of the enthusiasm away from what we all like about these cars.
It would take a back street garage about two hours labour to remove a csl box, inspect and replace a clutch and replace. Half a day if they took their time about it.

I know the specialist they use - there is only one place in the UK that can replace all the internal parts - the reason you had to wait was they the gearbox place is always stacked out. (They do a great job though so your box will have been well sorted)

Looks like the job that DQ would do for free just to learn and document. I thought the Getrags were seldom opened. If this will last another 40 years then it is a good move.

Yes sometimes it is best to bite the bullet - they overcharged but like you say DeCampos - the extra isnt a massive amount and now its done - sometimes I wish i outsourced more work as usually i end up doing everything twice with the associated downtime of about a year a job!

I don't think this is excessive money, having done exactly this job myself.
It is a fair bit of work and you need a lot of tools. I chose to do it myself after receiving quotes of at least 1500 euro for reconditioning of the box alone (without remove/replace of the box), and let's say "less-than-ideal" clarity of what that work would exactly entail. I replaced everything minus the synchros, and I needed a specialist to replace two of the bearings because you need a super 10 ton press to get to them. I have not replaced the synchros because they were still good. The parts and work rate alone set me back some 800 euros and I spent in total at least two days with all the logistics involved.
If someone would ask me to do it again for him/her, I would definitely not even think about it for less than 1000 euros plus parts, where parts would come in well over 1000 euros if it was to include syncros. And that's black-market pricing... So 2500 euros for an official job that included new clutch, synchros and flywheel resurface plus the convenience of warranty and not having to do any work on it does not sound excessive to me.

The biggest problem areas on these gearboxes are the two outer layshaft bearings and the output bearing, but it's false economy not to go all the way and change them all. What was done to yours is a proper overhaul that ought to be reflected in resale value later on.

In his case the box was done for £400.... Which is about what I paid. Still a bargain in my opinion given it will have come back looking perfect (and painted). Oh and it does include all bearings and any other parts required.

Like this... (Ignore slave on the wrong way up!!)

The fitting cost is what I think Jaymic have taken the piss over.....

Some good points there.
