Re: the Getrag 265 ? Just wondering if there is a list that tells which years and which models have them, or was it a hit & miss deal depending on what was available to BMW at the time ? What about Volvo ? Thank you & Merry Christmas :D ~ John Buchtenkirch

One note of caution regarding which model has the 265/6. The US 6 series didn't get the 5 speed until model year 1981 (from 9/80). I recently pulled some parts from a 1980 633 that was fitted with a 4 speed, much to my surprise. Luckily it had a side loader limited slip so the trip to the recyclers wasn't a complete waste of time.

From mye28.com

I've found this list to be helpful. I believe it's accurate however the one year/model I haven't verified is the '79 528i. I always thought it was the first year for the 5 speed in the E12 but this list says no. The listing for G265/6 applies to the E9 upgrade.

Nothing thru 1980 AFAIK

I recall none having a five spd till1981. Euro cars might be different. Also isn't the 260 the OD and the 265 the CR box?

No, the 260 is a newer gearbox and not as strong as the 265/6. Also the 260 doesn't have a speedo gear because they are fitted to BMW's with electronic speedo's.

The Close Ratio is the 265/5.

I've studied all the links but haven't found what the meaning of the "1.3" and "2.3" is. Here's the 265/6 (regular five speed) that is currently in my car. You can see the "225 2.3".

Here's the new-to-you trans I got the other day. The P/N is the same as well as the "225" but what's the meaning of the 1.3/2.3?

This trans is also from a car with an electronic speedo but I'm not worried as I'm pretty sure this one is destined for the Metric Mechanic upgraded rebuild so they can change it then back to mechanical drive.

Most of the numbers on a cast part have something to do with the rough cast part, or the mold for it, and nothing to do with the finished part. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Yep! The european 635CSI and the M535 had the 265 dogleg. The M535 came out in '80 but the 635 was available in the late 70's.
