How many e9's where built per day?

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but based on an annual production of roughly 4,000 cars with a five day work week, that would make around 15 cars per day.

Maybe someone can run the exact numbers, I find it a good conversation piece.

I guess what would be amazing is finding someone who worked in the factory at that time or a person who knew one. That way we could shed some light onto the production procedures.

Rob, quick question for you... Do you know anything about obtaining a cars birth certificate? I have already contacted the archives and received my build date/color/destination.

I am curious to see if this topic catches much interest and where it will lead ?

From 1970 through 1973 BMW averaged 5500 coupes a year and total production was over 30,000. That would mean at five days a week and 48 weeks per year is almost 25 per day at the Karmann factory during these four years. There wouldn't have been gaps in production, it is too inefficient. VINs are not sequential however but pretty close. Perhaps colors dictated production batches?

Karmann sarcasm aside...I am not sure if these coupes were finished at Karmann? Or shipped to BMW for assembly? If the latter is true then my original comment referred to BMW factory workers circa early '70's. Although one can argue guilt by association....

Back on Long Island I tried to restore a great Euro 1977 633CSi with a skin cancer.
A pleasure to drive that car, very nimble, great transmission, engine, and suspension.

We wrote BMW for wisdom on the rust problems hoping we would get some free fenders based on guilt or empathy. They congratulated us on our choice and assured us that new 635's were built with much better rust protection so we should buy a new one with confidence... Brand new 635's were selling for close to 50k$ then, so we drove the 77 hard in a race against rust, and rust won.

If you have had a bad experience with rust, then by all means you should be able to vent.

On a side note, I was lent a euro spec 633csi while working in SoCal and WOW. I really like my coupe but the euro box and always smooth six coupled with slightly more sturdy feel really made an impression. I wish that all e24's where of the early small bumpered variety.

Birth Certificates

BMW AG used to mail out birth certificates for free upon written request. I have one!
 
Let us not forget the month -long vacations where most of Europe shut down. And the paid secular and religious holidays, and birthdays, and sick leave, and recovery leave(seriously), and who knows what other days off Hans and Franz could wrangle. It's a minor miracle they turned out as many cars as they did. Oh, and the beer fests.

Jellobmw: Can you elaborate? Does it just have the same info that Andreas sends you or is there more? Also if you could post a pic that would be very cool.....or is it just like the one posted earlier in this thread?
