I wanted to post a story from my more spirited driving days.

It was mid morning on a sunny day and I had the coupe cruising on the highway. There was little traffic, yet all of the cars were scattered on the road. I look up in my mirror and I see a fjord bavaria approaching.....for a look.

Being a competitive guy, I instinctively push hard on the throttle and the needle climbs. I notice he is pushing too, wanting to pull up to check out the car or wave. But my instinct was to keep ahead of him so....we both push harder, dicing in and out of mid day traffic. He follows me for a mile or two of spirited driving, it seemed as though we were checking who had the higher top speed.

I finally hit open road and glance back to see the look on his face....'happily beaten' is how I would describe it.

Cheers,

MF

Back in the 80's I had a similar encounter with a Dino except he eventually won

A nice way that game is played is when the car behind is a police car and the goal is to reach the German border:

One day I will head for the border with the M5 just like that guy. The only reason it has not happened yet is I have not decided which border...

Remember, you cannot out run a radio or a plane.

You can if the plane is low/out of fuel!
In our neck of the woods, the pilot has buddies on the ground down the road from where you are timed. If they are on their game, they position the road support/kill team at a toll booth where you have to stop anyway or they put up signs that tell you you have been timed. At that point, its too late. If you decide to blow by the first wave of "buddies", there usually is another set further down the road who are far less "patient".

Radar detectors are no good in this situation.

Hey guys, I have been noticing a disturbing trend lately here on the forum. I am not trying to single anyone or thing out, but the off topic comments are not why I post here.

I am not saying anything should change, but please use your best judgment.

I also find it very, very, very, sad that we cannnot 'drive' our coupes with the personality that they were originally intended for. If I wanted a speed limit conversation, then I would buy the cheapest, most gutless car on the road.

Sorry for my weird comments, but owning a coupe is a privilege and setting a good example is even more of one. I understand high speed driving is not setting the the best example, but its like saying I will eat this piece of meat and hope that it was not slaughtered.

That is a big reason why I seldom drive my coupe anymore or value in-person functions/shows.

I know you all mean well and I hope we all have radar detectors!

If it makes you feel any better, I joined the local Lotus club on a group drive, and found out that a well driven Coupe can't keep up with a poorly driven Elise on back roads.

You know. For science. :)

I really like your post, but there is so many details to your story, I will try and address them below:

First, if you are running stock suspension, then its hard to keep up with anything on the road-- Bilsteins will help. This comparison is a tough one because it reminds me of three things actually:

1) A family sedan might be able to out accelerate our coupes. But the delivery and feeling are not even close. the high speed cruising is only matched by other autobahn cars IMHO.
( I was once forced to drive a Camry for 6 months and almost died due to its steering radius!)

2) A Lotus is a pretty nice car, but it reminds me of the one and only time I sat behind the wheel of a porsche, a 912. The seat pushed you forward and the position/flatness of the dashboard made me feel a little too close to the windshield. My point is that the delivery, style and grace are different for all cars. I will not knock anyone's car directly, but the Lotus is not my cup of tea.

3) I remember back in college I had a room-mate with a split-window bus. It was lowered and had a hopped up engine. He would challenge me to race's in the city and he would always win. I realized then that this was not a 0-60 car, but a really great cruiser.

The moral to the story? The package and delivery also count when measuring performance.

But with my competitive nature, I would be seeking a way to beat that Elise someway, somehow....yet I never did beat that old VW bus all those times we raced in the city!

Cheers,

MF

Point well taken, though I would humbly like to mention that as we all use the forum more and more we become familiar with one another and like to "jest" a bit. I think if we were to collect all the serious technical information on the site regarding coupes we would rival the factory itself. Sometimes we get carried away and I do agree that we have a space for the banter on off-topic, which is used quite regularly. I don't know, I guess if we took 10 threads on a topic probably 2 of them would be attempts (maybe poor) to be humorous and the rest would be "on-spot" but that's what makes us all a community. I do not mean to be argumentative please, maybe I'm being a little defensive since I am off-more than on-spot.

It is a great place to be though thanks to everyone :-)

I think I understand the message and recall a drive from Frankfurt to outside Nuremberg a couple of years ago.

It was in the end of October and a really nice sunny Saturday afternoon. As the winter was coming I had been given the opportuity to park my arktisblue '75 twin-Weber 3.0S in a friends garage until next spring - though I had to get there pretty fast in order to get the train back in time.

Leaving Frankfurt after a quick car-wash at 1.30 pm made me hitting the autobahn only mitutes after and pretty soon there was this W124 300E MB alongside in which the driver evidently wanted to push it a little. We drove full throttle and changed lanes for more than an hour past Würzburg and at 3.05 pm I arrived at my friends garage east of Nuremberg after having covered 262 km in 95 minutes - that was a really nice drive!

At some slight down-hill slopes I had to lift off a tad as the rev-counter started to get into the red section in top - what a blast! :-)

Next spring I went straight to the petrol station and filled it up: a little less than 50 litres making 18L/100km (approx. 12 mpg) a resonable figure with that speed in mind, oh - and one pint of oil...!

Cheers

Thanks for posting constructive comments guys. I really appreciate your understanding. I particularly agree that no matter how great a car is, its the person that opens the door which determines its fate. That sole fact gives all of us hope....It takes one to know one I guess.

Cheers,
