This coupe http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16138 was purchased by a guy (Andy) that lives in the Sacramento area and I met him yesterday. He bought the car sight-unseen and now knows he made a big mistake. He posted it for sale on craigslist with a description of his situation and I met up with him yesterday at his house and checked out the car.

He was going to sell it at a loss, because he would describe the car in detail for the potential buyer, but has since decided to keep it and do a rolling restoration for a while and then maybe a full restoration later. He has lots of parts to get started.

I suggested joining the forum here and get some much needed motivation and worldwide knowledge from the group. This isn't about letting him know what cars are worth or that he made a mistake with this car, he's well aware of that already, its about him wanting to save a coupe and invest lots of time and money in it. I know this place is the best place for him to get encouragement. Right guys? ;-)

I'll keep hounding him to join...

Dan

Dan, he could not be in better hands. Commend anyone who is even willing to start a project like this.
PS: how is the treasury? It seems it has been a while since the account needed to be replenished?

Absolutely. I'm just a guy who came out of nowhere and asked for some help because I have long thought e9s were cool. I had no connection to any of the forum members before I started hunting for an e9; numerous members gave freely of their time and wisdom to help.

I wrote about my adventure here:

A huge advantage in jumping into this place is you will find yourself among people who don't mind being obsessed with their cars. HBChris can describe the inner workings of most any portion of the e9 off the top of his head. sfdon knows every possible BMW engine permutation you might consider putting into an e9. DeQuincy put a beautiful paint job on his starter before installing it back into his engine where nobody will see it (but he knows its there). Peter Coomaraswarmy is hunting for the reason why his suspension feels slightly different when he turns right as compared to when he turns left.

And on it goes. Come on in, the water is fine.

Give me your tired, your poor, your rusty buckets yearning to rev free...

If you have seen John's car in San Francisco you would conclude that the best way to minimize an initial mistake is to redouble the investment and go for a full restoration. The final car's value is then not very sensitive to the initial condition.

What would Donald Rumsfeld do after buying a rust bucket? A surge!

And maybe send a a few errant ordinance to the seller's collateral garage.

Keep hounding him to join. I was with sfdon yesterday, and commented to him how great this forum is. I've been posting on various forums for the better part of 15 years, and I've never seen a better community of people.

If it wasn't for the knowledge of this place, I don't think I would have bought my coupe.

Here is the thread from February, it was flobloc's coupe until December. It was on eBay in January several times and then apparently purchased by Frederick.

He claimed it to be an easy restoration and was not truthful about the extent of rust, he also claimed to own three other coupes. He knew better.

Andy, the fenders need to come off to determine extent of rust repair needed. Fixing floors are relatively easy. I think it drove fairly well, sfdon can check it out for you. Hope you like the seatbelts, I put them in for Chris V. Good luck, we are here to provide support.

Ppi

A shame for the to happen to anyone. Surprising to me that anyone would spend $10k on any car without a $300 PPI. I bet that car can be restored to a decent driver standard for $50k with some judicious choices and owner elbow grease. That'll probably put the new owner under water, but perhaps coupe values will rise a bit more. I wonder if there is basis for a legal solution on the basis of seller misrepresentation. Hate together lawyers involved, but there's n appropriate time and place for them.

Andy talked about replacing the floors and spare tire well first and enjoying the car for a while. When he tackles the fenders he figured it would have to come apart, then probably keep going and change the color back to original Baikal. I sensed that he likes things done right so it may be hard for him to stop once he starts taking it apart...

That's why I haven't taken my Coupe apart yet. :-P

How much did he pay? eBay has it sold at 13,400.00 but the CL ad has it at 27k.

There's a sucker born every minute

I'm the new guy with the E9 coupe. Yes I bought it sight unseen from "Frederick". I knew better but it was all on impulse. I trusted I was getting a good car with minimal to the standard restoration. And I'm in the car business myself, have been all my life, and I didn't heed my own advice to anyone who asks about buying a car: "get it inspected". It turns out this car is in terrible shape. Rust in all 4 floor boards and travelling up the bulkhead. The right inner fender well is powder in places and has substantial rust and deterioration. The spare tire well is completely rotted away to the point where the tower where the spare tire mounts came loose. There is rust around the taillights. Aftermarket AC was installed but they used the non AC console pieces and the water intrusion completely rusted the blower motor. There was an aftermarket stereo installed (drilled and taped) on the dash and routed through the speaker grille. There are speaker holes in the front door panels. The rear decklid panel is toast. The factory fuse panels have been removed and replaced with aftermarket glass, which is better. The aux fan has been hard wired to a toggle switch under the dash. The dash is cracked in several places. The wood is all delaminating. The under dash panels including the glove box are all warped due to rust and water intrusion. The tool kit is missing and the holder is broken and cracked. The rear shock towers have been welded probably due to rust. And the car has been repainted to a dark blue and there are rust bubbles everywhere; fenders, fenderwells, etc. How much did I pay? Way too much, including a ton more buying new and used replacement parts.

Did I get taken advantage of? Probably but I take 50% responsibility. Do I care? no LOL - live and learn and the fact is I love these cars and always wanted one, and now I have one albeit a MAJOR project. Car runs and drives and that's what I'm going to do, hopefully I run into some of you out there on the road =)

Welcome! I've been in the car business almost 10 years, and it was hard to slow myself down once I saw my car in person.

Sounds like you have a great attitude with everything. Enjoy your Coupe!

It was hard to read your description Andy. I to feel for you and maybe finding a better tub would be an option? There are a few write ups here on full rebuilds of the metal work guys have done and they are amazing the talent these guys have!! Look forward to your updates.

HI Andy - welcome to the madness.

Sorry to hear about your buying experience; as I said earlier, I think you will find that folks here are very generous in helping keep these beautiful cars on the road.
