I have been having trouble identifying the actual part number for the headlamp high beam dip switch/flasher/stalk unit on my '72 CS. RealOEM shows" dip control
switch" 61311351856, on the left of the steering column, while "switch" on the right side, (where my dip switch is located) is 61311355322 but not identified as anything to do with a highbeam flasher switch. Hmmm
Reason I am looking is because my switch stalk has become a wobbly shaft that will not work consistently and usually just turns headlights off unless I hold it at just the right angle. It can still flash and may still keep highbeams on, but is unreliable now. Any ideas? Thanks

Your left switch is the 1856 part number you mentioned, it controls hi/lo beam and flashes the hi beam. Unfortunately it shows as NA. The second part number is the right side turn signal/wiper on/off switch used through 1973 models. Someone here should have a used switch for you.

High Beam flasher

Well, thanks Chris. I see now these 2 switches are reversed on my car. My turn signal/wiper stalk is on the left side of the column, high beam/flasher on left-that's why I was confused!

yes, correction, my '72 CSA has its high beam/flasher stalk on the right side of the column. Incidentally, by carefully wedging thin wooden spacers into the opening where the stalk enters the switch, I have taken up the play and the wobbliness is gone. High beams function, flash on demand, been quite dependable,... until I find a better used unit. Have seen new at Jaymic, but cannot quite justify that price.

Make sure you carry an alligator jumper clip in your spare parts box. When your switch finally breaks, there's a good chance that you won't have any headlights at all. I had some wedges in mine for a while, but it fell apart one night on the way back from Redding. I had to remove the lower cover and jump two of the wires on the switch together to get my low beams to work.

It seems odd to me that the low beam goes through that stalk, but it does. I know the stalk not only activates the high beam, through a relay, but it also activates a low beam relay that switches between the two filaments in the low beam bulb.

I am thinking about taking this stalk out of my low beam circuit entirely. I just put a set of H1s in my car, and don't need the circuit to switch between filaments. I am thinking about installing a low beam relay directly off the main light switch, with fused power for the lights coming from the battery. Has anyone done this? Is seems simpler and more reliable than going through the high beam stalk.

Chris,

Your coupe didn't come with a lo beam relay or a fuse, did the PO add this? If you switched to the H1 lo beam with city light and didn't change the stalk, or jump the two circuits, your lo beam will go out when the hi beam is activated.

Well indeed that is exactly where I am right now. I sort of tossed them in the car before I had the install planned. I tried to jump the two wires that went to each of the low beam filaments at the bulb connector, which worked for the low beams, but the brights went on without regard to the dip switch.

I intend to add a relay (any idea where I can find a nice round Hella relay?), so what I need to figure out is which wire to tap to trigger the low beam, which won't kill the low beams when I switch on the brights. From the Stevehose thread, I think I am looking for a yellow wire coming off the dip switch.

I think I can put my hands on a can relay....unless it is packed for the move, in which case, the boxes get opened in December.

Chris,

I can send instructions to you on how to jump the correct wires under the dash so everything works correctly.

Edit:e-mail sent

Got it; thanks Chris

Stan -- If you have one, that would be great. Where will you be living?

Chris - got the jumper in; all is well with the new lights. Thanks again. Now if only I can plow through the melted wire repairs, I can button my under dash panels back up.

I leave my house on Friday, then a series of temp accommodation until December when the new house will allegedly be ready. Seacoast of NH is home.... staying there. Can't afford Orange County CA.

Stan here goes your first temp accommodation, I chased this guy last Sunday with the E24 and it is all ready. All sofas inside are red.
