Gearbox oil

Hi all,


Am currently using a GL4 fully synthetic Valvoline Duragear oil, which I used for years with no problem in my race car,
But My 265 CR is quite notchy on shifts, was thinking oil may or may not be part of cause?
I know a lot of you guys swear by redline, what's the deal with this, why is it so much better than other oils?

Do any of you run anything else??


Ps, box has just had new bearings done.

i use EP 80 from castrol classic oils
 
I have a 265 CR, and I changed whatever was in there for Royal Purple Synchromax. 2nd gear synchro went from super notchy to fairly normal (though it's still a slower deliberate shift), it'll take second gear easily when dead cold, and it quieted down some of the roll over noise when hot.

I ran Synchromax in my Getrag 226 in my E39 and liked it. Same results.

I used to run Redline in my VW's when I was younger, but I found that the oil breaks down fairly quickly, and should be replaced every 30k or so.
 
I use Royal Purple Synchromax in my non BMW Ford Ranger. I find it needs to be changed about every 50K miles. It does work very well but I can feel the wellness start to wear our around 50K miles. My Ranger does see severe duty as it tows my race car all over the country and sees considerable off road duty in four wheel drive.

I have not found a better lube for it so I just keep changing at 50K miles.

One thing to note is; Synchromax is intended for manual transmission that are designed to run ATF. It is not a regular gear lube and is low viscosity.
