I know the two aren't necessarily related, but as I was trying to figure out why one carb (Zenith 35/40, '71 2800) was filling with fuel, I realized that the fuel shut off solenoids have been "deleted" from the carbs. The question is: Would these have been removed due to the inability to find replacements, or not equipped for the year/model of the car? There appears to be a screw in place of the solenoid (have pic if needed) ... Question 2 can I get replacements? FYI, the car DOES run-on after reaching operating temp. Prior to the last running about 3 months ago everything was peachy- aside from run-on. I have on order a rebuild kit for both carbs.

Thanks as always.

Solenoids are there to stop engine run on after you shut down. I do not believe they have anything to do with what your problem is. I vote float bowl valve issue which a rebuild should solve. Just follow the rebuild DIY from this forum. Solenoids are difficult to find, that's why in a recent post about a boneyard find in Washington, we all asked to procure the solenoids. Still don't know what happened with those.

I know I need them-- I thought they were malfunctioning, not non-existent! I have been getting by while depressing the gas pedal as I shut the ignition off--it's a pleasant death. From a set of donor carbs I have some non-working shut off examples, they do not click when I bench test them, but I have ones that I can hold and touch. I see some online, but not sure if the thread is the same, some have pins the ones I have do not....does anyone know if these will work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-ZEN...539?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ae64d1e03

Thanks.

So, I soaked the solenoid in PB Blaster and knocked it around a bunch... and I am getting life out of it and it's clicking. I can see the pin move through the port holes, but should it protrude out to be fully operational? Is the slight movement that I can see through the holes all that it does?

Actually, I started blowing on the end and cycling the solenoid on and off and it appears to work with light air pressure. Are these good to go?

If they flow/no flow when you blow on a tube attached to the end (simulating gas flowing through or not) then they should be okay. The blow/flow test is definitive.

IIRC my '67 VW Type III (squareback) had shutoff solenoids, so they may be in the VW catalog somewhere. From memory they appeared the same. Surely other cars had them as well... someone needs to dig out a cross-reference catalog.

As a temporary help to alleviate the run-on, you can place your car in it's highest gear ( 4th or 5th ) before turning the ignition off.

Greg,

It may work. I searched RealOEM for the coupe idle valve, 13111260516, it shows also used on e3 and 2002 with a size of 50(?). You have to go back to Change Vehicle so it searches all models.

When you click on the 2002 application it shows this number as Ended, but, the replacement is 13111261024, size 47.5! And it's for the two barrel Solexs, not early single barrel. Might be worth a try.

I don't have these on my cars, so I cannot look at mine, but it appears from the pictures like that shoulder is pressed into place. If so, you might be able to swap the shoulders you have onto the ebay units and get new seals, use the old seals, or use the 2002 seals with an o ring around the perimeter.

Wow, these are so close. One on the bottom is original. Looks like the thread depth is about the same with the rubber gasket covering some on the (top) 2002 one. The holes at the tip are not aligned. Anyone know if that would make a difference?

Just wanted to verify that the Fuel Solenoid I purchased (pictured) threads in nicely to the carb. Part number 13-11-1-261-024
