I'm curious about the member's opinions on E9 3.0 values. Classic car prices have been on quite a rise for the past few years in tune with the stock market. I'm new to the E9 scene and looking at buying one.
 
i think its ALL about how good the coupe is ... and how documented the condition is.

if its been restored / fully stripped, painted and reassembled by a high quality company - with photo documentation ... and everything is fully sorted, it is easily in the $70k+ range. i don't think it matters greatly if this is a 2800cs, a 3.0cs or a 3.0csi. the 3.0CSL is a total different discussion.

i think an excellent survivor or an older restoration is probably 45k to 55k ... as long as everything is still correct.

an excellent driver is 35k to 45k
a very good driver - little to no rust is 25k to 35k

E28 M5s, Datsun 240-zs, 510s, BMW 2002s and of course Porsche 911s. Through the roof. Starting to make me lose interest and pine for a used Cayman GTS in about 4 years.

I still think my Miata is the best car I have driven.
 
I inquired on the Rahal CSL for sale at Canepa today and they are asking north of $400k for it. If it sells anywhere close, it will move the entire E9 market up a few notches.

So the 2800 would be as valuable as the 3.0 all else equal?
 
in my humble opinion, yes ... maybe because i own a 2800cs. ignore the hagerty values, that just means they don't have the documented sales. here are the basic differences
1. 200cc smaller engine, similar HP / torque numbers - if the engine has been replaced with a 3.5L ... no difference
2. solid disk front brakes ... very easily solved
3. drum rear brakes ... a little more complicated but very doable
4. brake booster is a smaller format on the 2800cs
basically everything else is the same body and trim

a few noted 2800cs off the top of my head ...

guaranteed that all of these cars are worth way north of $60k ... which far exceeds any hagerty value on a 2800cs. keep in mind, the fully restored coupe is all about the labor in bringing the car back to basically new condition ... the price of the labor doesn't go down because the badge on the back says 2800cs. other versions are dependent on condition.

in a perfect world, with all things equal - the csi would perhaps be worth more due to its higher compression ratio, but if the engine has been replaced or rebuilt - it starts to level off the playing field (unless the engine was rebuilt to the true CSi compression ratio, but many older rebuilds were probably done with stock CS parts - unless built by noted BMW engine rebuilders like SFDon, MarioL or equal.

Indeed, it will be interesting to watch what this sells for and who buys it. There is a separate thread here somewhere which has some detailed pics of the restore including the bodywork and rust repair. Anyone seriously interested should look at those closely to get an idea of the body work quality and attention to detail.

while i loved my previous '06 cayman s, and i really like my 997 - '11 911s, i recently drove a current cayman s and a current 911 ... and the steering has gone numb. you don't get the road feel that you got from the 987 / 997 range of cars. they must have gone to steering by wire instea d of a steering column. it steers beautifully, but it doesn't have the soul that theprevious generation had. so i have put my dreams of getting a cayman gt4 into the dreams i don't want to achieve pile.
 
Given people that really know coupes…….. rust or the lack of rust is pretty much what determines the price but many unsuspecting buyers fall in love with coupe looks and learn a very expensive lesson. IMO given equal cars the 72 & 73 coupes are likely worth a little more just because of the improved brakes and they aren’t the beginning of the model run, the 75 coupes with their bumpers may be another story. Having said that I’d rather have a really sound 2800 over a rusty 3.0 any day of the week. ~ John Buchtenkirch
