The top rendering is more stylish to me because the flaring of all four fenders simarlarly is "too much" of the same thing to my eye.
being that i am an ex-e30 m3 guy ... i have to say that i prefer that style. i have seen a few 2002 with the e30 m3 style, and they looked amazing. i was over at a local guys house the other night, who was sending his e30 m3 to Mario ... and i was reminded about how much i love that sleek style.
the picture makes me want to get another 2002 and do a very tasteful build. i think the box flares depend on how radical they are. if they are tailored, similar to the e30 m3, they look great.I have three 2002's and one with pig cheeks. I don't think the box flares work as well on the 02's because of the location of the flush turn signal. most people pick up the line below the turn signal and they sit too low for my taste...like justin beiber's pants..lol

I thought this custom E9 was posted in this thread, but perhaps not. The consensus from most is "meh", including M3 lovers and E9 lovers. It's kind of where you are heading though. It looks well executed IMO. To each their own...

Here is my old 2002 with the Zender fender flares. A lot more angular and more closer looking to the e30 M3
i like it ... all you need now is the front air dam to complete the look
I have always loved the sculpted, rather than the chiseled look...I think the latter came from simple function of the wider racing tires coupled with the new emphysis on aerodynamics in racing...I always thought the pig-cheeks were more old school (designed with aesthetics in mind), and the box-flares were more "angles and wedges are in" early Giugiaro/Italdesign school (engineered for performance only)...To me, boxes say race car, and bulbous flares say touring car...never really thought about it in an apples to apples aesthetic kind of way...I have to vote for the more bespoke look of the piggies...and you already know my thoughts on the side vent detail![]()
