We were at the Euro Auto Festival, to name one of the events this summer, received a Grundy flyer. I just called as it was stated that they would be so much less than who you were with now. They offer $250.00 each towing occurrence plus up to $600.00 expenses because of your break down. Unlimited miles. I am happy with Hagerty but thought I'd get a quote.

Of course, as we discussed among the CS owners attending The Vintage, what is our car's worth for the stated value? That was the magic question.

Anyone have experience with Grundy? Will the premium go up as a bait and switch?

The big clout might be to have an appraisal. I have had that done twice many years ago. Anyone do that recently?

i wish i could get with a company like grundy but it has man requirements, such as garage and clean background (ive had 2 speeding tickets about 4/5 years ago) i didnt qualify beacause i dont have a garage
i use gieco now and have historic car collectors insurance valued at 15k maybe its not enough? what are your thoughts?

...

Coupe owners without a garage park them in their living rooms.

Amy,

i used to be with Hagerty, and was relatively happy, until they raised my premium by 20% for no apparent reason - no claims, no change in policy, no tickets or accidents. i swapped over to Heac0ck Classic early this year ... better rate than Hagerty before the rate hike = better coverage, raised the value 10k using Hagerty's article on e9 value increases.

cheers

I think that several of us at The Vintage thought between $40,000 and $60,000 on the southern side of the US for a nice show worthy driven car. A few of the CSL's were bringing $125,000 at auction at one time. But no one wants to over pay for insurance. We have a locked garage, Hagerty and Grundy's first question but we do attend many shows so it is left in a parking lot overnight at the hotel. There is risk in anything like the house burning down, our garage is in the basement.

Hagerty's price guide thought that $60,000 stated value was not out of line. I think they'd insurance for what you thought it was worth (more money for them) as Hagerty's full loss risk is probably low as we really baby our cars. Now that is my opinion.

Years ago, when I talked with other insurers that cover the collector cars, it was more difficult to insure for stated value. I was asked rather snippidly if I had any ties to a club for instance. I was able to say I was current president of the GA chapter of the BMW CCA. As the cars age it must be less likely that we would drive them all the time, less risk for them. That is why I had an appraisal and could barely eek out $20,000 in the 80's. One thing I have learned keep all your receipts. If there is a loss it is better to provide them with paper proof of what was done to the car then no proof at all like the complete frame off restoration or whatever level your car has achieved. Of course we now have the net where we can look up CS sales to show what others are willing to pay for our model. To not have to hassle if there is any type of loss is best because imagine having damage or no car, I would be a mess as my CS has really been a part of me for 32 years. Let's not find out the hard way!

I like the rice idea. Bubble bag? Have you seen those?

Although I suggested we put in a plate glass window between our dining room and garage, husband Wayne didn't go for it! Hey better than being in the house.

Hagety made an errors, but stood by the quote

Hagety made an error with my quote, it was too low. When I called back to accept they spotted the error, checked the call log, then they stood by their error and gave me the lower price Can't ask for more without having a claim.

Those nice show worthy coupes are $75K and above, don't discount their value. $40k buys a nice chassis for later restoration these days.

I would like to think mine might be one of those. HAving said that since the days in the 80's were the coupes might bring $20K in our wildest dreams that makes my heart sing to know that our beloved CS has (finally) made the grade!

The Hagerty quote made good, wow!

That puts a big star on their foreheads! Stuff like that makes a company - these days it is most important with the social media and all.

Been with Hagerty for years. I contacted Grundy to see what they would offer and it was very difficult to have anyone get back to you or follow through on their promises. Not the best customer service, I decided to stay away and keep to Hagerty.

I've had great luck with Hagerty

I have eight cars insured with Hagerty (the E9, the Bavaria, the 635CSi, two of the three tiis, the Z3 M Coupe, the E30 and the Lotus Europa). All of them are probably a bit underinsured. I pay freaking peanuts for the ones insured for about $6k, like $35/year. I've not only been happy with them, it has been absolutely essential to my doing what I do. When I start driving the E9 more (it's been mostly sitting for the past few years as I've been enjoying other cars), I'll boot its value up.
