Ok what is the secret to getting the oil pan off, I have removed the sway bar, the alternator/power steering bracket, the a/c bracket, all 250 10mm pan bolts, tilted the engine everyway possible, but I can't get the pan inner baffles to clear what appears to be the oil pump uptake arm. The manual says to turn it and drop it down but there is no doing that. The subframe says no. It looks like the only way to get enough clearance would be to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the engine up. Am I missing something?

I haven't done this on an e9, but on other bmws you can drop the oil pump into the sump. Looks harder than it is.

haven't done this on a coupe, but i did it on an e3. as i remember i tried everything and couldn't do it, until i unbolted the motor mounts and jacked the engine up slightly ... the mounts had sagged a little. good time to replace the mounts while you are there.

I considered that but there is a bracket attachment on the back of the intake arm about halfway towards the rear that is not accesible.

This may not be the most helpful post, but it can be done because I did it. I did not jack up the engine but think I had new motor mounts in at that point, which would have raised the engine up as far as possible while still bolted in.

If I remember correctly, it was also a bit of a job getting the pan back in with the new gasket.

Lift engine and install wooden blocks above motor mounts
My set is about 1 1/2 inches high.
You want #6 to be at TDC

Update, I had the engine at tdc already (so #6 would also be up also, yes?) so I loosened the top engine mount nuts to almost off, I was hoping that I could jack up the passenger side high enough without the engine coming off the mounts and the nut would prevent it going too far, it was just enough to get the pan out.

Thanks.
