Water pump brand

I need to replace my water pump. Usual places selling Graf or Meyle. Trying to make sure I fit something manufactured in Germany, but am starting to have doubts anything like a replacement water pump is actually manufactured in Germany in 2015. So, as water pumps are a typical wear and tear item, I expect there are some on this Forum who have replaced their pump in the last year or so and perhaps you have some good reviews you can pass along.Thanks. If you actually need a new WP, just do it. If you've done it before on this car, you will have known to use some antisieze on the bolts, and it will come off/out without significant difficulty or snapped bolts. If not, you'll learn.

The usual failure mode is a leaking seal, which allows coolant onto the front pump bearing, and the fan starts to spin crooked, make noise or wobble. Early sign is a drip from the little weep hole below the shaft. A really bad pump will clunk each time you start and if it's really really gone, it might throw the belt. They can go on "for a while" before losing enough coolant to become a menace... IF AND ONLY SO LONG AS you keep topping up the coolant.

I avoid Uro if possible.

Thanks. So much coolant wasted to replace a pump, wanna make the right choice. Appreciate your reference Steve. I would like to try that one deemed manufactured in Germany. On other sites for other BMW models of more recent vintage than the E9, there have been complaints with Graf...others doubt Meyle. Some have seen the impeller come off. Was wondering if anyone has recently installed a new water pump on the M30 block, and are happy, or if they have experienced premature failure.

I had installed a Graf water pump for my e24 M6 and it was made in Germany. Good quality pump and relatively inexpensive. No problems whatsoever since installation.

slightly O/T but may be relevant

Just got and installed a Behr fan clutch on the wife's '98 Benz C280. The fan roars like it's gonna take off - clearly the clutch is not freewheeling when cold as it ought to. When hot it's tight.

The reason for all this malarkey is that the water pump failed and I couldn't get the fan clutch off the old pump. This led to a new pump, new pulley, new fan clutch.

Supplier is very accommodating and shipping another (!) while I have the first one. Hope it works...

I had thought that Behr, which supplies a lot of stuff for BMW, would be a good choice. Don't know or care the country of origin - it's the brand on which I rely. Goes to show there are lemons in every basket.

Water pump

See, thing is.. a lot of manufacturers have found a way to lower costs by manufacturing in China. Now China can make an excellent product, but sometimes a company that chooses to source manufacturing in another part of the world is often trying to cut costs. I prefer to replace a water pump once, say every many, many thousand miles/kilometres. Some of our colleagues over at E39/E46..dot coms have seen impellers come loose on more cheaply built water pumps. I would prefer to install a unit that has some provenance and quality over just low cost. This is what I notice if my Bosch spark plugs were manufactured in Brazil, China or elsewhere when I expect they should be labelled Germany. Only looking for experiences/input to avoid having to shed another load of coolant, remove radiator, replace pump with a reputable unit.. This board has SO much experience, we can all benefit from this collective knowledge of such a common wear and tear item. This is why I put it out there. My present water pump has survived 25 years of use, or should I say, I have!
