Looking for a pair of serviceable used rear shocks and front strut inserts. Going to be installed in a Bavaria that has been off the road for a couple decades, which blew out a rusty lower spring perch on a preliminary jaunt. Want to evaluate the vitals of the rest of the car before spending on new parts for now.

Let me know what you might have!

Thanks!

I blew out spring perches as well. I got used ones from 02 salvage. I bring this up because BMW made a bunch of strut housings for the E3 and E9 and some are different lengths than others, very slight but you will notice if you don't match them.

Also, there was a pair of NOS rear Konis I saw on Ebay for 90 bucks. If you choose Bilstein, be aware that only one shock is made for the rear, it is the Sport Version but per Bilstein directly, the Sport Version and HD are identical so they discontinued the HD. HD for front are still available. I originally put in OEM Boges and the Bilsteins are leaps and bounds better.

Thanks

Hi Bob,

Re-reading my post, I should clarify that the front spring perches are alright for now, it was a rear that separated from the shock body. So really just need only the rears, but since I'm posting an ad I figured it wouldn't hurt if someone had a set of four Bilsteins laying around.

Checked eBay for those Konis, someone must have snatched them.

I had thought that Sports and HD's had common valving, with sports having a slightly shorter stroke. Is this incorrect for rears in the case of E3/E9?

Thanks and still hunting for some rear shocks!

Yes, the sports and HD are valved the same. The lengths of the sport and HD for the E3 were so close and one can simulate the other based on perch setting so now only sport is available (per Bilstein when I called directly). I believe I got mine from BavAuto (who was having a 10% off sale recently via their newsletter). Found this.

Remember, the e3 uses very different rear shocks than the e9. They are 'struts with the spring surrounding the shock, somewhat similar, yet quite different than the fronts on the e9.

I know Classic Garage has a new set of Koni rears for an e3, as they sent me the wrong ones for my e9, and I just returned those to them last week!

FWIW, I had my old rear Bilsteins rebuilt by Bilstein, as I bought new rear shocks and the threaded shaft was different on the new vs. old (new had allen key at top and smaller threads, stuck up higher, etc...). They totally recreated my old shafts and rebuilt my shocks to the spec that I wanted, and it was reasonable; if I remember actually cheaper than new. Also, they were great to work with.

I had thrown out my front inserts prior to the rear rebuild, so unfortunately didn't have cores for rebuild, or I would have had this done with the front as well.
