Wheel wax?

I just got my wheels back from refinishing and they look terrific. New rubber should improve the driving experience over the 10 year old Michelins!

Question: before I mount them I am thinking of waxing them with wheel wax or some other brand. Will this actually accomplish my goal of making them easier to clean?

All thoughts are welcome.

Yes it will, I wax my wheels regularly. Keeps the brake dust easier to wipe off. Not that any of my wheels get very dirty, with my fleet I have a lot of wheels to clean too.

Wheel wax is good, wax the inside with a coupe coats before mounting on the CS.

I have applied Poor Boys Wheel Sealant to my refurbished Style 5's (yet to be mounted). it was suggested to me only last week that Mr Sheen does the trick...apparently it leaves a silicone layer that makes cleaning brake dust etc a breeze .

Stan,
Now that you have a lift, you should pull the wheels off every now and then and give them a good clean (front and back). I assume you got a sliding "bridge" jack with your drive-on lift... If not, you'll want one sooner or later as it's really the only safe way to jack up the car when it's on the lift ramps.

I use regular car wax on wheels. I'm not sure the dedicated wheel waxes are significantly different (someone will chime in on this). The other thing you can do is use a "dustless" brake pad (Repco Delux), but you'll give up high temp performance. I've not yet found a higher performance pad that does not leave a significant amount of dust on the wheels after 500miles of use.

BTW, who refinished your wheels?

John,
I had Rim Pro restore the wheels. I got a good recommendation from Duane.
VSR orchestrated the event and returned the wheels refurbished with new tires mounted and balance.
I read through the Wheel Wax website and if their propaganda is to be believed, there are ingredients in wheel wax that repel brake dust. I went for it. The stuff is much softer than the carnauba wax that I have used in the past. More like the "buttery" wax recommended by RMP for the car. The container recommends two coats of wax, so I did that. Took about 1.5 hours, the spokes take time. The result was excellent! I do have the tray on the lift but not the jack as that option was another $$$. So I just take the car off the lift and use my pneumatic floor lift. I might buy a bottle jack at some point so I can swap tires on the lift.

I will follow up and report how the Wheel Wax holds up.

clean wheels

Hey Stan,
I avoided all this by powder coating my original wheels. Great job and cleaning is done with soap and water.
Rick,

I would not use a bottle jack in a lift tray unless it were bolted to the tray. Before I bought the $495 bridge jack I was going to get two bottle jacks and bolt them to my tray. I didn't because I needed to relocate my ramps inward 8" to accommodate the narrow track of my old cars. The bridge jack has adjustable outriggers which allow me to use my ramps at different widths (orig width for brake jobs on my wife's SUV) and then back to REALLY narrow for w 1000lb sports racer.

Yes I'm a little paranoid, but I like doing lots of work on the lift because it's easier on my back.

I know it sounds weird but I once used the lift to pull a motor. Everyone should have one of these in their garage. No if only I had space for a two poster...

John,

I think the Repco Deluxe pads have been NLA for some time.

Chris, boy I'm dating myself. I should have said "PBR/Axxis Deluxe organic pads (as PBR is the new name for Repco).
Mesa Performance sells them (amongst others).

I don't use these as I didn't like how they handled heat. On my DD's (BMW 5 series) they over heated and left deposits on my rotors ... leading to pulsing. But on a lighter vintage car that doesn't do track days I think they're hard to beat for low dust.

Mesa told me these too are gone, at least for fronts, I think. Looks like only Metal Master available for fronts, Deluxe for rears.
