Fuel tank difference for fuel injection

Hi All,

I have a 2800CS, which I wish to change over to a fuel injected power unit. I note that there is a different fuel tank for injected cars but wish to ask why. I would be running L-jet which uses an inline pump. As long as there is a return why would I need a different tank?

Early injected cars had two holes in the tank,one for the pickup and one for the sender, pump was under rear of car. Carbed cars have one hole and a 318Is pump can be lengthened to do the job but sender is e28 to hold the pump and will read 1/4 remaining when 1/3 is left. Other non BMW pumps have been used, Don used a Mustang pump.

Thanks for the responses guys and especially for the image of what to fabricate! So I can keep my 2800CS tank and just add the 318is in-tank pump with sender - great one less expense to not have to buy another tank! Is that just a pre-delivery pump which is then complimented by the external main pump?

Thanks for the extra responses. Looking at this image Alan it looks like you have the fuel injected tank. My tank has only the smaller hole for the sender unit and pickup that goes to the carburettor. So HB Chris, based on your post can I just change out everything using the smaller hole or it is better/easier to go for the injected tank?
 
The e28 sender holds the 318Is pump just fine, or vice versa, but you need to lengthen the pickup foot of the pump to the length of the original pickup. I posted pics here in 2014. But Don likes the Walbro pump, easier to modify?

It's the only option that includes it's own trough at the bottom to prevent fuel starvation (I don't know about CSi tanks, but all newer fuel injected cars have this built into the bottom of the tank). An M30 isn't all that high performance, but I've seen S14 engines with a piston blown apart from momentary fuel starvation (lean mixture causing preignition).
