The rear window motors on e28 cars have long been established as a great upgrade for either the earlier cars (up to mid '73) with some modifications, or a direct plug and play for the later cars. The only thing needed for the later cars is to cut off the molex connector on the two wires and put male spade connectors on each wire.

There is another alternative that I have just confirmed is almost exactly the same motor as the e28's. The only difference is that it already has the female spade connectors mounted on the motor chassis like the later e9 motors. These are the window motors for Porsche 928's made between 1978 and 1983. These motors, like the e9 motors have 8 teeth on the gears. The later model Porsche 928's have 10 teeth per gear - the only difference, but obviously they will not fit our cars. I'm 99% confident that the left door motor on the 928 fits the right door on an e9 and vice versa (I have both a late 928 Left door motor and a late e9 Right door motor - identical mounting and gear orientation.

These motors, like the e28 motors should be available from wrecking yards, or even eBay. The KEY piece of information on a motor that 'looks like' the e28 motor is that it have 8 teeth on the gear, not 10. An alternative if you don't want to spend your time crawling through old Porsche's is a 928 specific dismantler in Anaheim CA. An acquaintance I've known for about 15 years operates it. Name of the company is 928 International and their website is: 928intl.com. Another 'Porsche recycling' source would be DC Automotive: DCAuto.com They strip/recycle all Porsche models.

By looking at P car motors for sale on eBay, I've found other Porsche models that had that 8 gear motor. These are (actual cars that had electric windows, many did not) the 911's from '74-'87. Surprisingly to me, the 944 and 924 cars always came with 10 tooth motors, so they are out.

Hope this might be helpful to someone looking to upgrade their window motors in the future.

What's the price on the porsche motors?

I did a little internet research on this yesterday, but couldn't find any great deals. Real OEM carries the later (10 tooth) 928 motors at a decent price (I think it was $70 or so), but not the earlier ones. On ebay, used 928 motors sell for about the same prices as e28 motors (typically about $100 for a junkyard motor + regulator).

By the time Mark Anderson has the motor 'for sale' at 928 Int'l, the car has long been 'killed'!! He gives a one year guarantee on parts, and - IF you can wait until Christmas season, he usually has a half price sale on all parts in stock between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
