Sequential VINs and Build Dates

I have posted here before that I track US/NA market coupe build dates. Lately I have been asking for sequential VINs from the BMW Archive to see if there is any correlation to date or color. Here is an example:

2240907 (Stan's) built 6/28/73 Chamonix to Hoffman 7/20/73
2240908 built 6/26/73 Chamonix to Hoffman 7/06/73
2240909 built 7/11/73 Chamonix to Hoffman 7/11/73

Consecutive VINs, same color, different build dates

Some more:

4310006 built 01/08/74 Fjord to Hoffman 1/16/74
4310007 built 12/28/73 Baikal to Hoffman 1/16/74
4310008 built 01/15/74 Granatrot to Hoffman 1/15/74

What I can only presume is that Karmann perhaps painted the same color at one time but when shipped to BMW they were assembled on different dates. But when looking at the 431xxxx coupes that doesn't hold up. Except in this case they were delivered to Hoffman on or near the same date. (Hoffman meaning FOB/title transfer in Germany)

So, still no rhyme or reason to hang a hat on.
 
Cool info. Let's setup a script to email bmw info daily with consecutive VIN's. :) Then load the registry with all of the gaps.

This takes Julia quite a bit of time to research since it isn't digitized. I ask once every month or two for twelve VINs and don't want them to think this is too much to handle. I will share with anyone. I also don't want to edit our member's entries with a build date without their permission.

I was being a bit facetious, but it is great that you are capturing this info! As far as filling in the voids, I meant where there were no member entries. I think you do this now for cars for sale right?
 
Hmmm. Interestingly mine is 4335069 and it was built in December 73 in Fjord according to the sticker on the door. Your list above shows those 431xxxx being built a month later... Very odd indeed.
 
431xxxx coupes are manuals, 4335xxx are automatics. And your door sticker is only accurate to within one month or so, the build date is official. And yours was built 1/1/74, a New Year's baby!
