Interesting... Were the e9 boxes ever painted red? It is different than what's on the earlier 2000CS;. it uses the same box as a 2002.

This pic was taken on my first encounter with my car... the QR box was certainly a nice surprise.

Help us out here- what is the ratio of this box versus the standard hydro box?
Thanks!

While we wait on the answer to Don's astute question, I can tell you that the early QR box such as mine is 3 turns, lock-to-lock, compared to the standard 3.5 turns on the standard box of the model. (power steering not available on the 1st-gen Coupes, we got a bus wheel, instead)

Opinion on your manual box with a smaller (390) steering wheel?
PITA or no big deal?

Appears your early box was:12.8:1

I=12,8:1
32112670005

Later manual box was: 16.4:1
I = 16,4:1
32111105301

And the PS box is

Hydro steering box I = 15.7:1 1 12/1968 11/1975
32131105075

Clearly I am lost on all this- the csl box seems to be a bigger ratio than the PS or early box.
What am I missing?

Don, even with the limited amount of driving I've been able to do, I like the QR box a lot. It provides very good response. I run a 350mm Petri in my hotrod '02 (with standard steering box) and the feeling is similar on corner entry. Obviously, low speed, parking lot turns require additional effort, but it's not problematic.

I went out and measured my 2000CS's wheel.. 420mm, outside edge-to-outside edge.... I can only imagine how bus-like the standard box must feel with that big wheel.

Was good to meet everyone at Peter's shop. Good to see the Polaris is going to a happy, new owner... beautiful car.

One last detail about the early boxes and identification (this will only pertain to the 2000CS models) :

They all will start with the numbers 7316 955 and the 3 digit sequence at the end will tell you what it is:

149 = standard ratio box from early car

171 = standard ratio box from later car (no gearing difference between the 149 and 171) (Later, but still meaning pre-e9)

177 = QR box used on most 02's (my '67 CS was fitted with this box in 1984)

151 or 155 = QR box used on very early 02's, 2000CS' and some neu-klasse sedans.
