Front bumper guards up or down?

I've been working on my front bumper.
I just had it all re-chromed and have new rubber pieces. 72 Model

The guards or riders is where I have my question?
I noticed that on some guards the rubber piece points up or out at the top and on some others it points out at the bottom or towards the ground.

Which is correct? It looks like the guards can be flopped left to right and this would allow the position to change.
There is a cutout on the side of the guard to allow the rubber piece to fit into the guard.
Also one car that had left them off altogether.

This one pointing up? Thought I had another one of these but I guess not although I did see more.

The cars you show with them pointing down are 73 models and maybe US only 73s. US 73 models had the "May West" downward pointing rubber.
 
Well that helps guys.

How can you tell a 72 from a 73 just by looking at them?
Is it the guards?

" May West" huh? Roger we're the only ones who are old enough to know who May West was except maybe a life jacket.:)

I keep thinking about the car I saw without the guards?
Looked nice and clean although you can see the seam and bolts holding the 3 pieces together.

the rubber pieces are different for the '73 than the 69 thru 72. i have examples of both pieces that i can show you. when you look closely at the 73, the bumper mounts are different and the rubber pieces between the bumper and the fender are much different that the little trim on the pre 73. on the earlier car, the end pieces use the same trim as the rubber trim between the over-rider and the bumper.

the rubber that looks upside down is a 73. the white one is the way your coupe should be like

Leave it to you guys to turn something sexual, but that is hilarious and cool.
My car is the second "Atlantik" colored e9 pictured. it is a '73 US spec.

I have the smaller bumperet covers for it, but have not put them on yet. I might not now.
 
so, after being insulted a few times by guys that said my "rubber" was upside down thanks for this! now, can you use the 72' prior "rubbers" on 73' metal guards, and are they available?
 
I always thought that Dagmars that said "up", looked better...and the ones in 73 only (down) looked like a mistake. I always wondered who and why that change was made. Jaegermeister or Stroh's Rum-influenced decision, maybe?
And Waynsie, I think these nicknames are from the 50's...'57 Chevy and late fifties Cadillacs really had them...

The chrome guards are identical, use either rubber. It's around $150 each for rubber and $400 for the guard.

Dagmar bumpers is a slang term for chrome conical shaped styling elements which began to appear on the front bumper/grille assemblies of certain American automobiles following World War II. They reached their peak in the mid-1950s.

The term is derived from the notable physical attributes of Dagmar,[1] a buxom early 1950s television personality known for low-cut gowns and pronouncedly conical bra cups. She was amused by the tribute.
