I am looking for a trunk lock with chrome in good condition. Key is optional as internals will be switched.

Use realoem.com to get to know your part number and call local BMW authorized dealer . There is a small chance they have the part you need .
realoem.com select the "car" vs, " motor cycle.... and at the bottom select browse . Don't use the VIn number as it won't work for older classic cars ...

I know the part is readily available new from BMW. But I don't need the entire assembly as I have keys and the tumbler from an E3. What I don't have is the assembly/surround that fits the E9 since PO had the trunk lock changed with one from a younger BMW. Possibly an E21.

In my opinion - it will be hard to find good condition/looking trunk "assembly/surround" lock from E3/E9 as pretty often owners lost their master keys and they left only with wallet keys, with which they couldn't open the trunk - so next they or new owners just broke locks.
You should seriously consider buying new lock.
