Gray (grey) grilles vs black grilles

I recently picked up (thank you @Keshav ) some NOS grilles from DE and they're grey.

Is that how they're supposed to come from BMW as an over the counter thing?

I never seen an E3/E9 w/gray grilles.

They are 2500 grills, a friend Matt Cervi also has those on his Taiga Bavaria.

They are the same grills as the ones on our coupes, just a different color. I believe they are sprayed that color because the backs are black.

All early e3 had the grey grilles. Speedway in Santa Ana can paint them for you but you need to remove the trim first.

Isn't removing the trim the hard part? I suspect you could spray with SEM semi black, no?

Not too bad, Mike did it and Speedway polished the trim and painted the grilles.

My E3 grills fit perfectly but my 1970 E9 has the mounting tabs in different places meaning you have to drill a new hole in the grill to fit the body.

I discovered the mounting issue on another 2800CS, the body mounts are in different locations, the early grilles must have been different to accommodate.
