Yes, if you upgrade your alternator and you are 1973 or earlier, the upgraded unit will have the pulley nut hit the power steering belt. I need the pulley from the original alternator with the recessed nut ( I sent my core back before knowing all this).

great information to know ... i was going to get a new pulley, or try to, but now i guess i need to just use the old one

My power steering belt isn't anywhere close to my alternator pulley.

The crankshaft pulleys from 1974 on, had the double pulley like the one above. I believe maybe pre 1973 with AC had the same as my 72 Bavaria with AC has a double pulley on the crank. However, pre-1973, the crankshaft has a single pulley for the alternator and the water pump has the double pulley, thus the power steering belt comes off the water pump not the crank.

have you given any consideration to using the newer style alternator / PS mounts? not positive it will solve your issue, but it is a bit different

not only that , but the diameter is different, and you will experience problems to find a belt that fits.

1- on the first point (hit the steering belt) my experience is not quite, very close , but free enough, seems worse than it is
2- on the belt size problem i found the following: automotive belt sizes step in numbers that make the correct belt be impossible to mount and the next size very big and impossible to tighten

the answer is in the industrial industry belts, they just came in middle sizes when compared to automotive, i can check what i finally bought if this is your case, please PM or call @deQuincey , as i might not read this thread frequently

deQ, sent you a PM. I have a few ideas.....once and engineer, always an engineer.
