Hi Folks,

The heater panel isn’t one of those parts that is regularly swapped out, although the resistor does wear out. I would like to know what you have by year.

1. Symbols
2. Unlit Words (specify language)
3. Illuminated words (specify language)

I’ll start. My ‘71 was built in July 1970 and has symbols.

My ‘73 was built in October 1972 and has (edit: illuminated) words in German.

AFAIK the symbols face plate is not illuminated whereas the worded ones are. My 1973 lights up

Mine has just the symbols like your first pic.

" The BMW 3.0 CSi VIN 2262501 was manufactured on May 03rd, 1972 and delivered on May 05th, 1972 to the BMW dealer Krauthäuser in Fürth (Germany)."

Okay interesting. So we have illuminated German going back to May. US non-illuminated through June. I know that you have owned your car since new or like-new also!

Keep the data flowing! We need German cars before May 1972 and US cars after June 1972.

If they are worded, they illuminate. If they don’t then it’s a lighting issue which isn’t uncommon

That isn’t the case. Take a look at plate that @Stevehose posted. His is a non-illuminated version with text.

Seems like a worthy topic! I’ve already learned a thing or two!

I must admit never having seen that in between type with text but not illuminated (even if in English). Trust you to complicate matters ;) :)

The BMW 3.0 CSi VIN 2260144 was manufactured on August 25th, 1971 and delivered on September 07th, 1971 to the BMW dealership in Hamburg.

This is also confirmed by @deQuincey, who has a 3.0 build date of May 71 per the registry. So we know that the 3.0 CS got the face plate with symbols. We don’t know when it changed to text n the US or Europe.

Side note: What language were the interior bits for french and italian imports. In general, did euro manufacturers cater to their target market,
or was the effort limited to the owners manual only?
