Just to be clear. In all, there should be at least 5 versions. 2800, early 3.0 in English and German without the lighting holders) and late 3.0 in English and German with the light holder and the holding tabs molded into the bezel itself)... Of course the lighted versions had to have a different wiring harness too.

and there is an early 3.0 version only symbols no lights, my car is from 1971

I have two that are both a little dirty and could use new paint. The front face is metal and could be painted. I'm not sure if you could paint the plastic vent mechanism.

I bought a spare one with English; don't know if it has lights or not.

The lettering is recessed if it is illuminated, easy to tell

I have a pic of mine in the other thread. I didn’t realize it was illuminated either. I just thought that BMW was being intelligent about adding the text to a generic plate.
