Howdy, everyone.

I purchased one of the original CSL Petri steering wheels years ago, and have been enjoying it on my coupe since. However, I have concerns about its lifespan, given the foam outer skin. Therefore, I was wondering if the original spec of the wheel had it covered in leather (or something else) or are they traditionally bare? None of the pictures I have seen are particularly clear on the subject.

Thanks!

Post some pics......

The CSL wheel was covered in leather, with a smooth foam core. The standard foam Petri was cast to look like a leather stitched wheel. The foam has a leather texture and visible stitching, but it is all foam.

So is the "real" CSL wheel simply a leather wrapped foam Petri or a completely different animal? Seems I've seen people wrapping petri foam wheels in leather.. Is that done often?

It is just a leather wrapped foam Petri, but the foam is from a different casting. Also the hub is quite a bit longer than the others, matching the ergonomics of the Scheel seating arrangement.

And is Keshav and Hans reproducing those longer hubs?

if I may elaborate, the ‘foam’ in a Csl Petri is more like a hard rubber base (thinner than the foam on standard wheels have) over which the leather is wrapped making the overall thickness more or less the same as the foam wheel. In that sense, they are infact different ‘animals’.
Standard foam wheels are being leather wrapped and can look very nice too but the wrap will be thicker compared to an authentic Csl wheel. For every 50 standard Petri wheels there’s 1 Csl wheel...... (might be a bit exaggerated ;) )
