Will an M106 turbo engine fit in a 72 E9? And, will a rust-free E9 unibody handle it? Engine specs are shown below.

M106: 249 bhp (185 kW) 280 lb.ft (380Nm) torwue
M30B30V: 177 bhp (132 kW) and 188 lb-ft (255 N⋅m) torque

Lenoxx - you can get around 240 hp with a b35 (3.5L) with a schrick 284 cam and megasquirt injection. you can get that easier with a euro b34 or a m90 with same add ons. give a shout out to @sfdon ... he is the 'pro from the bay area' that basically just does coupes.

Thanks. I'll get in touch with him. I can get the M106 engine today, but I don't want to blindly buy it and regret it later.

I’m in Oman now.
very little reception, back mid February

Thanks for the input. It sounds like the effort is maybe not worth it. I'd like to swap the old for newer, but to restore the original engine and store it. It's complete with only 135k miles. Higher HP isn't my goal anyway, I just found a 745 turbo nearby for about $2k and thought I'd ask here before buying it. Anyway, I always liked the "fly by wire" feel of my 750 and perhaps that's what I'll look for, but not a V12 or EV and without any cutting and welding on the E9. I like plug and play so I can keep the original parts for later. Perhaps its not possible, but I have a soft heart for old old cars.

@gdub0717 has a complete e34 M5 that he is selling for a very fair price. That would net you 268 HP with emissions equipment. That also gets you a G280 close ratio 5spd.

Inspiration from @Gary Waggoner. Not sure if he used the 280, or how well it fits. Either way, it is worth a chunk of change.

That looks nice. Will it bolt up to the E9 subframe? If not will the E34 subframe bolt up to the E9 without mods?
I probably don't need any emissions equipment. In AZ, emissions tests aren't required for classic cars so long as it has classic car insurance. But having a modern engine in it might force me to get the emissions test. Perhaps that's off topic, but I'll look into the E34 option, but maybe not the M -expensive.

I'll reply to my own post here. Searching the forum for M5, etc. tells me that an M engine swap will require substantial modifications. So I'll shelve that option for now.

What about modifying the original M30? I know there are off-the-shelf options for engine management, but I like to design my own stuff. Has anyone taken a similar approach to engine automation? Perhaps installed a stepper motor to replace the mechanical linkages to the carbs for that fly by wire feel?

One of the local BMW guys has an e9 with that engine in it (I've not seen it but others in the area have confirmed its existence); his car has a hole cut into the right side inner fender for the turbo.

i can tell you that the least expensive option / HP is the m30 b35. they are plentiful and were 208 HP stock with 9:1 compression. a rebuild will get you substantially more with a schrick cam and megasquirt. the price of a b35 block is not very much.
the m90 or euro b34 are harder to find and start with higher compression and will net at least 240 HP. yes, you can rebuild your stock 3.0L M30 ... you can get reasonable power out of it but i think you will spend more money than going the b35 route ... the extra 1/2L makes a difference. remember, the m30b30 is 9:1 compression.
the m30b34 is 3.5L and less compression yielding around 180 HP (stay away from the b34 unless its the 10:1 compression euro motor - 215 to 219 HP).
the m90 is also a 3.5L with 9.3:1 and had 215 HP stock

Since no one has mentioned it, here you go, no affiliation, starts at $3400 plus $150 shipping. I bet that's more than you thought to pay... TCD is oriented toward injected M30s starting with the E28 chassis, but doable on a CS (not that I've gone there), so there's more to it than just the kit.

I just put in a 3.5L from an Euro 635. Terry Sayther built the engine and SF Don supplied the injection pieces, head, the megasquirt and harness (and countless hours of "homily"). I'm still working the tuning but it pulls quite well, much closer to a modern car though It never will feel like the M5, Shelby or Turbo Porsche. I feel much more comfortable taking longer trips with the new engine as well. By the time you get done with all the bits and pieces the cost can be quite high (10-11K) and almost all the assembly was done by yours truly, which is another miracle- that it actually runs- so depending on how much help you need the price could change up or down.

I'll keep a look out for those engines.

The engine looks great. Is that a stock piston it looks performance aftermarket?
