What are they worth these days for a nice one?

He is opening a tank museum.
during these 'off' times, might be good to start a cottage business - fix and sell these tanks. in order to buy one, you have to send in a core tank so the cottage business doesn't have to go out and source these. i have 2 tanks but neither have been repaired but i need to do this before too long
A radiator shop did mine. Cheap
Stevehose had the paint stripped from his brass tank. I loved it so much I had it done to mine. Certainly not everyone's tank mod. Steve, might you show us a photo of yours?
His is the more beautiful of the two.

that's what i am planning to do - fix mine but i will keep the other as a spare. finding a good radiator shop these days is the problem. i won't be polishing the brass though ... polished brass with ceylon seems like a bit of a clash ... but i guess i will look at it before painting
Interesting question. I like the polished brass but my car is Polaris. Kind of metal to metal color wise.

Are the plastic tanks prone to failure?
not really Eric, the pre '74 cars were born with brass tanks ... so that was what is original. the plastic ones came from BMW cost cutting measures
did you find a tank? I know my brother has an extra
