Rear Bumper Under Riders

I have no idea if I will ever mount them but they are on the way to me. I prefer the look with them better than without them but it probably depends on the day. If I do put them on I would be inclined to use some type of spacer so there would be only a small contact point(s) with the body. There wasn't an issue with them in 1991when the car was stripped and painted, and they were re chromed with the bumper in 1991, but they definitely rotted from the inside out over these last 30 years.
 
I have a '73 with the extended rear bumper and the rubber spacers. The under-riders have holes in their bottoms. I had one decent one and one very rusted that was replaced thanks to a forum member. After getting it re-chromed and several fixes to the previous jury-rigged way they were mounted,all is now correct. My advice is to fill the mounting holes in the body and leave them off of the rear bumper. The only purpose they serve is to catch water & debris coming up from the rear wheels while rusting again. Spend your Coupe $$ on other parts of the car. Here' a pic of my car w/o the rear bumper. You can see the holes for the under-riders in the bottom apron.
Off topic, maybe best for a PM, but can you share details of you exhaust? 3"? Stainless?
 
My exhaust is the Coupe King stainless 2 1/2" dia. exhaust. The shop polished the tip from satin to polished with wet/dry sandpaper. This was attached to the Stahl header by an exhaust specialist. The sound is loud compared to a stock system,but I can only hear the triple DCOE's induction during spirited driving.
 
The area under the bumper & the lower quarters should be sprayed with "shutz" chip resistance and painted body color. This helps protect where the under-riders are, I like the clean horizontal line without them yet my car has them.
 
I think the ones from ebay (werent't they from Lithouania?) are stainless steel. Still it would be good to check the drain holes once a year or so.

Still, I keep looking at my clean, straight, rear end and think I like it as is. I would have to drill mounting holes in a clean, unblemished sheet of steel, so no, I think I'll keep them in the parts box.

You and I both will leave them off. I do think they look good but I had the rear panel smoothed out by the body shop. They accepted my offer of $275 instead of the $320 Buy IT Now price. They won't get here for a while.
 
I agree with tmh and Willem Tell. My '73 USA bumper has the larger mounting brackets and the black spacers that keep the under-riders off of the rear apron. They can't be removed without removing the entire bumper. The shop had a very difficult time getting everything aligned and mounted. I could have saved a lot of money by just having the bottom mounting holes filled leaving a smooth rear bumper. I also had to have one of them re-chromed and replaced due to severe rust. But all was done and it turned out fine.
The pic shows the bumper before I loosened the 3 nuts on the center spacer and leveled the bumper.

Back on Sept. I5th I ordered a set of the Bumperettes from IngusBenz in Latvia. The guy mentioned above in this thread. The box arrived this morning. Well packed.

Stunning quality. Triple copper is correct. These are Pebble Beach Concours quality. Zero sand marks in the copper. Flawless chrome. No rotted out inner surfaces. I have only been working with Coupes for 33 years, and I have seen some real garbage held together with copper plating. These are the nicest bumperttes I've ever seen. I would say buy with confidence. His communication was very good.

DRILL A BIGGER DRAIN HOLE. The dirt,stones and salt easily clog the original hole. 73 USA cars can grind a slot in the space. All this is out of sight.
 
I have a set of his front bumper horns of the same quality for sale in another post under parts for sale. Shipping from Latvia is a least 4-10 weeks.
