I have a very worn front windshield rubber seal. It ends up the person that sold me the car had a brand new one in the trunk. I just verified the part number. Can anyone recommend somewhere in or near San Jose CA to install it? Yeah I could do it myself but I'm afraid of messing up that windshield.

Feet to remove BUT since you are replacing the gasket, just cut it and make the removal super easy (did it by myself). Rope plus friend with wide palm to smack for install.

Wow, Larry David has a Studebaker! Cool. ;) I have watched this operation a few years ago. I had a 2002 that needed new front windshield seal. Shop came to me for an insurance repair on my E39 windshield. I asked if he could do the '02 after. He said he would, and did the rope method. All about experience. If I tried it myself, I could see getting covered in all the black goo pretty quickly. Gotta have the touch!

You must be getting Larry and Bernie mixed up. ;)

The other day at Home Depot, someone shouted at me "I voted for ya, Bernie" :)
Dick, I don't mean to expose you but I know that Larry David and Bernie Sanders are twin brothers, one is a jewel thief, the other an international man of mystery. Now I know there is a third brother ...

do people think glazing compound should be used on the E9, not seen it mentioned here or the O2 forum.

HI!

Would the windshield trim on a E3 or E9 for that matter be installed the same way as the Studebaker windshield+trim? That is installed unto windshield with new rubber seal, taped in place, rope into slot for body, etc, like blog?

BTW - I have done 2002 front and rear windows with the rope method; never used glazing just soapy water to lubricate. Then the locking strip once installed.

Cheers,
Bill

Yes. In fact, the same guy did my E3 as did my Studebaker...

glazing compound
Sealant (black goo) is always a nice backup to ensure a water tight seal between gasket and body. But, most of us don’t drive in the rain or wash our cars that often so IMHO it’s optional for an E9.

In the old days, I remember watching glass shops use metal tipped “caulk guns” to inject non-hardening sealant around both the seal and glass and between seal and body. I believe, without evidence, that those metal tips scratched the paint underneath the seals and increased the likelihood of cowl rust.

Will I use black goo when I redo my front and rear windshield? Yes, because I am sure I’ll end up driving in the rain, fast.

John
