Hi All,

Happy to join the community, my name is Pim and I bought my E9 +2263787+ in Dec 2020.
I'm living in The Netherlands (Leiden area) and have an engineering background.
Worked and lived in China for almost 10years, and relocated back to NL end of 2018.
After the initial reintegration and necessary home improvements, I thought it was time to reignite my passion for classic cars again..

I've found her in the NL not far from here, and consider it a lucky shot as they have become very rare (and/or unbelievable expensive) nowadays.
Currently I'm investigating all the whereabouts of these beauties, and considering all options for my new love.
So far I have found and listed approx 25 items on my repair / to do list, and the forum is providing me great info and advice on many of the items.

I am planning to keep track on the developments I made, and expect to pick up some speed in a couple of weeks.
She is currently sitting in my neighbour’s garage with a noisy gearbox (Getrag 262 4-speed).
So my first job is to replace the tranny with another 4-speed (I managed to locate nearby)
Also the Frankenstein repair and leaking exhaust needs attention, so I am considering to replace that as well with a robust stainless steel, while we are at it..

Currently I am still gathering info on the history of the car, and I would like to ask you for some help on decoding the VIN and other serial numbers around the car.
Are there any etching or other techniques to bring back some of the numbers, perhaps through highlighting old paint traces on the tags?
Tag numbers are attached, and based on these and some traces around the car I manage to find out that the orginal color was Ceylon Metalic.
Now that was a nice surprise to find out, and since then I added a total repaint on my list as well...

Car is imported from Swiss to the Netherlands in 2001, and since then I am the second owner.
While investigating the car I found a part of the service history from Swiss that indicate a service history at a single garage from 1979 onwards to 1997.
It's therfore very likely that I have become the 3rd or 4th owner.

Anyway happy to be an owner of an E9 and happy to join the community.

You can email the BMW Archives at [email protected] along with your vin and they will confirm build and delivery dates, delivery location and color. Good luck with your journey down the rabbit hole!

Even on few pictures I can be seen, the condition of the car is very good as for type and it's age.

Welcome aboard. The forum is amazing. Married into a Dutch family, in all my years of visiting, I have only seen 1 or 2 coupes. Given your few pics, I think you’re going to have a real show-stopper when finished. Hup Holland!

I've found (matching) numbers on 3 locatons so far are there any more?
- VIN tag
- Fire wall
- Engine

Regarding the VIN Tag unreadable numbers, I believe the missing numbers should read:
Zul. Ges. Gew: 1750 kg
Zul. Achslast vorn: 900 kg
Hinten: 900 kg

Upon request I have added some more pictures, taken on a rare sunny day her in the NL...
Please advise on anything you see not being original or in need of a more thorough inspection!

p.s. Yesterday I made a gearbox swap, however wasn't able to complete the job and test it due to a very very stuck middle support bearing on the prop shaft..
I will report the findings in the general section, as next to the speedo drive switch especially the clutch lever ball-pin switch proved to be a real challenge

Congratulations, you have got a really nice car !!
I am just wondering if the “noisy gearbox “ was actually the stuck prop shaft bearing all along ? If so keep your own gearbox as if it is good you could keep it as a spare :)

that's a very cool car.

I wonder if that side moulding is stuck on and you can (w/a heat gun and fishing wire w/plenty of WD40), remove it.

Ya, it has AC retrofitted? Or are those just supplementary ducts from the heater?

Thank you all,

Gearbox replacement completed and while we were on that side of the car replaced the exhaust and prop shaft support bearing as well.
Pictures, observations and lessons learned will be posted in the general section.

Today I had a test ride after almost 2 months of standstill, and results were positive on the gearbox and exhaust.
Roads here in Holland are frequently brined / anti-iced in the winter, so I had to pick a dry day after a very rainy one.
(second condition is quite easy, the first one however..;))

Starting with the exhaust, upfront I was a bit afraid of the stainless steel being too loud, but actually through the revs its very nice and very comfortable and I would argue its maybe quiter on the inside than with the original system.
Gearbox is working fine a well, its doing all the right things in all the right places.
I did feel however some vibration coming from behind the gearbox initially.
Prop shaft settling in or perhaps getting all the play out of the new exhaust, anyway after a couple of km no more issues there.

So far so good, back to your eagle eye observations:

@DAVE V: I think it's related to the A/C (Which is not working btw) for this reason I believe I have no glove box mounted as well... I will add that to the list of things to be sorting out..

@teahead: The aftermarket moulding; Thanks for mentioning, I didn't notice it initially to be aftermarket, now I want to get rid of it asap.. WD40 + Dental floss..:cool:

There's a special place in hell for the people that paint over Ceylon E9s :D
It's the fire pit next to the one reserved for the guys involved with fitting the 'City Pack' options to RHD CSLs..

LOL. Don’t forget that the 80’s and 90’s did
exist. :D There was a lot of Ceylon walpaper in the 70’s that didn’t survive as well.
