This is the oval cupped cover plate on the engine bay side of the heater inlet/outlet pipes. I have attached a photo from the heater rebuild DIY from Eric in the Netherlands. Great write up BTW. Marco has helped identify the part number, but when I google or search BMW nothing shows up. Does anyone have one of these to spare? Thanks, Mike

U bet. Still completing the heater refurb, so no huge rush. Just surprised I did not notice this before. Could be a source of heated engine compartment air, entering where it is not supposed to. I have ordered the new seals that go there, but need this plate to do it right. Thanks Ed. Mike

Interesting, I had my heater out while doing the interior and I know that plat was not there. Mine is a 1972

1972 as well. The diagram in realoem shows what is also in the photo above. The Blue book describes removal as : " remove cover plate and foam sealing" so I think I want that because I have ordered the foam sealing from the dealer and I want to have the best install ever! I mean, once I saw this, I figured that since my main objective was to achieve a cooler cabin, I would look at ways to minimize heat transfer from engine bay into cabin. This was one obvious opening that I could improve upon. Hence, my search for said "cover plate" . Interesting, but not surprising, that a 49 year old car would, perhaps, be missing a piece. ;)

Damn!! I can't find the extra plate that I know I have. I'll continue looking, but if you can source another, I'd appreciate it.

Very sorry! -Ed G

No worries Ed. I appreciate the effort. 2 weeks ago I was certain I had a couple of interior trim parts that someone needed. Looked everywhere. Perhaps they hooked up with your heater cover plate! ;)
