Cocomat Pattern question

My lovely wife is gifting me some Cocomats for Christmas. The test pattern arrived today. We test fit them and I'd say they were pretty close, but I made a few marks on them to trim them down a bit. Now I'm questioning my changes to their pattern for several reasons: 1) I was pretty hasty in doing it, 2) it's really kind of hard to tell just exactly how they'll lay when using paper, and 3) my carpeting isn't put down all that well right now.

A little more info on #3: The car has some sort of sound dampening material on the floor (dynamat knockoff perhaps - the backing is really quite slick), foam insulation and then the carpet. I know that it's quite bunched up/thick when going over the transmission tunnel because my center console is way too wide at the bottom. Extrapolating from this acknowledged "tight" section to rest of car, maybe all of the carpeting is a little bit like that.

I've searched Cocomats on the forum and discovered that they are well loved - yay! Also that Drew Gregg (DG) and Doug McKenzie (DM) have their own patterns that include slight modifications to the drivers side mat. Beyond those specific patterns, I really wasn't able to find other mentions of patterns.

So my questions for members with Cocomats are:

Do you remember what pattern you used (mine says B7 on it), but more generally did you use their pattern, DG, DM or other?​

If you used Cocomat's pattern, did you make any changes to it?​

Also, anybody know who the E9 belongs to in the Cocomat Gallery?

I used the stock pattern supplied by Crissy at cocomats.com.

Don Bower corrected the E9 pattern Cocomats uses. So printing & fitting the paper templates is just a formality.

The patterns should look like these mats.

Thanks to both of you for putting my mind at ease! I'll tell my wife to just give them the thumbs up on the stock pattern.

I don't want to tell you that you are over thinking it a little too much, but you might be. Like Andrew, I used their stock E9 pattern and mine fit great. They are really high quality and have since put them in three other cars.

Please, feel free to tell me I'm over-thinking it. I'm prone to that at times. I'm definitely going with the stock pattern after everyone's input.
 
All of us are guilty of overthinking this, I did the same. Bottom line is that you don't see the part of the mat we are discussing and the primary goal is to not have things under your feet that prohibit accurate control of your clutch, gas pedal and brake. I was a bit worried because I replaced the floor and the bracket for the gas pedal and I was a schmuck and did not document pedal placement prior to repair. I got it right though.

I expect we could start an online meeting of Overthinkers Anonymous and get quite a few takers from this group.

I think part of my overthinking was initially looking at them like mats for contemporary cars with their molded carpets and mat hooks. Slightly different animal here.
 
To expand on Andrew's comment above, the driver mat that I received extended behind the accelerator linkage -- thereby preventing "flooring" it to full extension. I mentioned this to the Cocomats folks and they provided a corrected replacement mat immediately, at no charge. This was ~7 years ago. I don't know if they subsequently modified their stock E9 pattern to include this modification.

I am very happy with the fit and quality of the mats, and I do have sound deadening underneath. I have them in 5 of my cars and appreciate their support of the CCA Museum.

I've had Cocomats in other old BMWs in the past, but they were OLD - probably from the original cocomats manufacturer or knock-offs. They certainly weren't like these newer versions with the rubber backing. Not that they were bad, just not the same thing. It's nice to find a great company producing a quality product with so many enthusiastically satisfied customers. Pretty rare to find such an overwhelming chorus of positive comments and experiences.
 
Most enjoyable thread :) Can you guys recommended a supplier of fail safe cocomats that that would work well in my CS interior? Many thanks.

I ordered, and installed some Cocoa Mats this summer. My pattern modifications were similar to what DWMBMW shows in post #7. I went nuts adding and subtracting from the patterns that I was sent (which was labeled "B7"). I may have gotten a bit OCD about it, but was pleased with the results as well as Cocoa Mat's customer service.

The main things I changed were the two "ears" that extend up the firewall on the driver's side:

- The right "ear" short than the left - I can't imagine why they made those two different lengths - so I extended the left "ear" upward.

- The left ear was too narrow, and didn't cover the carpet at the left/top side of the firewall. I added a triangular piece to the pattern to fix this.

These two changes are shown on the first photo below.

- I also added paper to the passenger side mat so it would extend the same distance up the firewall as the right ear of the drivers mat does. And added bits of paper to other places to better cover the carpet. This change is shown on the second photo below and the final result in the third.

I helped Jay and Rob with their templates. I started with Doug's pattern and found it didn't fit my driver side due to the foam wedge that's under my carpet against the left foot kick panel. I think Doug's car doesn't have that wedge,so his pattern is a little different than mine. I wanted the left "ear" to fit up against the kick panel. But the critical measurement was how the mat fits up close to the accelerator panel. That has to be correct. Here's a pic of what you will get if you ask for the template that I finally sent them. Crissy was very cooperative in sending me a second driver-side matt after the first matt didn't fit. They should have 2 patterns--one for floors that have that wedge, and one without the wedge. Adding extra floor insulation might require a custom pattern, however. The first pic shows the first matt that curves away from the kick panel. The second pic shows the corrected matt and the template they should have with my initials "DG"
