Cleaning up the garage, and contemplating why I’m hoarding this gearbox.

Does BMW Getrag gear boxes have serial numbers? And if so where would they be located?

I found a couple of set of numbers so far, 262.0430.00
225
1.2

I’ll share a pic once I’m done degreasing it

All we can say at this point is that it will fit an M30. It is likely a 262, 265/6, or 265/5. Don’t need pics of the numbers. A pic of one side of the case and the tail housing will do it.

There’s a couple of picks

I figured it was a 4 speed since my car was upgraded to 5. Also noticed the stamped numbers assuming these are the Serial numbers.
Can you tell what year car this came out of? 2)are the gearbox serial numbers the same as the engine/chassis number?

No numbers matching serials on the trans. It would have needed to come from an e9, e12, e24 etc before they switched to five speeds. If you remove the bellhousing you will find a two digit year stamped near the input shaft.

The 262 serial isn’t terribly helpful because the 265 has a 262 front section and they all say 262 as well.

Good information as usual, but I’m not sure I’m asking the right question, or maybe I didn’t read it.
So on a numbers matching e9, I know the engine SN are matching the chassis. Are the gearboxes matching as well?

There is no evidence of these numbers being recorded by BMW, it would be interesting to know if this number is the same on other 1974 4-speeds.

As usually the most valuable in 4-speed gearbox is complete speedometer drive gear that fit for 5-speed conversion, if it complete & gearbox is in good running condition it is worth i think ca. 400 with bellhousing, your newer type bellhousing itself is at least 100, because it is all 262 265 5-speed boxes compatible.
Without speedo, without bellhousing, gearbox itself is ca. 150-200.

Ok $4,000,000 it is :). L O L. Since everyone is asking for the moon. Kidding. I was trying to see if I needed to keep it for my coupe as provenance ( old 4 speed that came as a package) guess I can put it up for sale and clear 2.5 square feet of shelve space.
Thank you
