WTB - upper timing cover

Hi there

I am looking for a good used upper timing cover that is original/untouched/not machined. I am long blocking in a M30B35 into my '73 bavaria (replacing the M30B30 long block). I am debating about surfacing the B35 head, as its dissembled and clean. So this step, if the bavaria's upper timing cover does not match the B35 head, has the potential to hold me up and force me to dissemble the head for machining. So to avoid this potential holdup and hassle, I am looking for a used cover to machine along with the B35 head's case in its naked form.

Please let me know what you have. This is kinda ASAP.

Are you looking for a distributor front cover or moronic? Then I need a head thickness measurement. I believe I have both.

I have an uncut distributor front cover with a center valve cover front bolt hole. It measures 129mm. I checked this against my uncut b35 head and it is a match. I don't know where you got 134mm from unless you included the valve cover thickness. There are two m30 valve cover bolt patterns one with a centered front hole and one with an offset hole later m30s had the offset.

Silly me; I misread the vernier scale. Look at my picture; the location of 130mm makes the measurement look larger. Mine is 129 mm too :)

If Bill doesn't want this, I could use it for my M30 head build.
 
Keep in mind that the metal at the top where you would tap and thread is .018 thick.
If you are happy with a 6mm bolt that only goes in 3 threads- so be it.
I won't do it and most machinists would tell you that 5 threads is minimum.

The best answer is matching the valve cover to the timing cover or using the 705 twin hole- two thread castings timing cover.

Taking an in depth look at both the distributor and the moronic covers itl looks like BMW moved that front bolt hole to clear the motronic rotor drive. Yes I agree that on an original distributor cover to drill and tap a new hole is risky I would drill tap and stud with a locknut. But my preference is for an early valve cover with the roundel on it. Your. 02 is worth it.

Hi there

I was very fortunate today. I found a fellow enthusiast on eBay and Kijijji very close to Edmonton. He had several M30 engines in his garage along with several very collectible cars in his garage and yard including late 90s M5, Alpina B10, and 2 Isettas! Crazy! He had a timing cover that has the centered valve cover bolt hole so I will be able to used my bavaria's valve cover (M30B35 valve cover pictured below). Yay!
