How do you install these? Carl Nelson and @OCCoupe say from underneath with cone on top. @sfdon says from the top which I did in this pic. I guess both ways work?

How can one disagree with CN? I believe Don‘s correct, from the top tapered side down. That’s how mine were and are installed.

If i remember well, @deQuincey did an investigation on that rubber bushing orientation. I vaguely remember that it installs, counterintuitive, with the big edge on top. That would match to @sfdon 's method.

I say 'counterintuitive', as one would quite logically argue that it makes most sense to have the thick rubber part inside the strut tower, transferring the forces of a resting car to the top of the shock.

Also my Walloth&N repro rubber split in 5 pieces from just sitting 4 years installed without driving. I've since replaced them with bmw dealer parts.

Let me see if I can dig up that thread....

Resurrecting an old thread. Not sure if it has anything to do with how the bushing was installed. This weekend I noticed a “thunk” coming from the left rear as I drove over bumps. I inspected today and found the left rear shock bushing failed. You can see the crack in the photo. It has slipped about 1/4 inch. You can see, It’s not sitting flush to the top of the tower. I’m fortunate it didn’t fail completely.

I installed Bilstein shocks in 2017 and new bushings from inside the trunk cone side down. I had the sock tower tops reinforced at that time. I can’t recall if I used genuine BMW bushes. The right side looks fine.
So I have an extra bush but I ordered another one today from BMW as I will also replace the right side just to be on the safe side.
These are the bushes I have. I believe the one on the left is the correct one. The one on the right says “Boge” I believe it’s left over from when I installed that brand shocks in my 2002. The hole diameter is larger as the metal sleeve is not a snug fit in the larger bush but it does in the smaller one. I ordered new metal sleeves as well.

When I install the news bushings I’m planning to do so from inside the trunk cone side down. I still think that’s the right way.
