FWIW, these lights are very handy while driving at night. Love mine.
Years ago, a fellow Bay Area couper found and brought a number of these style of map lights (vintage NOS) back from his overseas travels. They (IIRC) were both a cigarette lighter style and a push button 'hard wire' type made by 'Alexander. Not sure if Alexander made the BMW OEM unit sought, but it was a period 'rally/touring ' accessory, similar to a Halda Tripmaster or Heuer Rally Master. They were available in black or chrome. My hard wire black example is 22" tip to tail.

I located a Butler Flexilight, from the '60s, to install in my Healey BJ8. True period accessory. Cool addition to '60s, '70s cars.
I am also looking for one, if others have been satisfied above

Thank you all for your suggestions. Steve Hose is rummaging through his boxes and I have my fingers crossed that I'll buy his. @BMW Pete it seems that the main resource for these are in the UK. At: https://www.autochron.co.uk/lights.shtml They have quite a collection.

I have this NOS Butlers rallye map light available
Extremely tempting. Steve is rummaging through his stash. I have made a commitment to him if he can find his map light. I would def. keep this as plan "B".
