Hello Forum,

While I normally attend to mechanical work myself, I injured my right hand this year and for now don't have the dexterity needed for most jobs. I installed a new set of Weber 32/36's last year but they have never been quite right with the aft carb running rich.

I am looking for a solid mechanical shop reference, or more specifically a carb specialist if anyone knows of anyone. Vehicle is a 1973 3.0CS.

Thank you. I just spoke with him and he was as advertised.

At this point I am exhausted trying to find someone. I installed a fresh set of Weber 32/36's June of 2022. The car has idled rough ever since. Recently I began fouling the aft three cylinders due to rich mixture.
 
Ed Kaufman is our Carb specialist. Started at age 15 working at Weber BMW Motors sweeping floors and moved up the ranks. He now has 52 years experience working on vintage BMW’s and was factory trained on carbs. He just finished Barney’s carb repairs and tune. Let’s us know if you are heading to the NorCal region, we would love to see your car. BTW - bring donuts and I promise Ed won’t be too grumpy.
 
A couple months ago I went to check out an E9 that was listed on Bat, the owner used Check Point Automotive for his 3.0CS.
I, personally have never used them before , but he seemed quite happy with their work.
They are in Mar Vista area which is not too far from you. You might want to give them a call to see if they do this kind of work.

I used to go to Summit Automotive in Marina Del Ray, back when I was in LA. Dave was great. I even had him buy an e9 that I didn’t want.

I looked into Summit a few weeks ago. It seems that the shop has closed down permanently. Thanks for the thought though.

Thank you Don, I would love to.

I will definitely make the trip up in the coupe this year as we have family in the Bay Area and Sea Ranch. I am getting a little blowback about the Weber 32/36's that I installed in 2022 being the wrong size and the main cause of my problems. What is your opinion as far as Weber downdraft carbs and the most suitable for a 3.0 engine?
 
Ed is off in the mountains this week with family - I will ask if he can respond when I talk with him next.

Not uncommon to receive opinions on Weber 32/36s that did not work for someone in their car, and their circumstances. But even more common are those that run these carbs and are quite happy with them. I will admit, it has been a "journey" to fully understand, rebuild, and set them up correctly in my application, but, in my opinion, they are very well suited to the BMW M30. Good luck with your "tuning", and of course, the recuperation of your hand. Mike

I used the holiday down time to try to sort out or identify the issue.

What I found:

Rich carb was flooding though the valve closed fine when the top was off.

I removed and weighed the black cellulose foam float (spec11 grams) weighed in at 24 grams, thus the valve would not close.

Solution:

Purchased two brass floats.
