Hi guys, I have a bit of an oddball item for sale here in Melbourne, Australia.

I own an 1970 2800 E3 which was supplanted with the drivetrain from a 1972 3.0 CSL in the 70's when the CSL was wrecked due to a fire. The car was owned by a local BMW mechanic, and they turbocharged it in the late 70's/early 80's with the L-Jet system out of an E23 with 2002 Turbo low compression flat top pistons. A lot of work was carried out but they apparently never got the turbo system running too well, and barely drove it. So the car's been languishing in the shed behind the workshop since the early 1980s.

I've since bought another easier to restore E3 which I'm going to install an M30B35 into, so I don't really need this car anymore. But before selling the whole car complete, I've been told by a few BMW heads that someone with a RHD CSL might want the CSL mechanicals, or at least the engine considering the block has a RHD CSL engine number.

The car also has other parts from the same CSL: 4sp Getrag gearbox, suspension/brakes, 3.25 LSD.

The E3 itself is up for grabs too, if anyone wants the whole lot.

I have little idea what it's "worth" but I don't want crazy money for it. I'd be happy to remove the engine/other bits and palletise them for transport. Get in touch if you're interested.

since the engine / vin number is 2285194, i would say 3.0 ... the 3.2 was a bat 1 / bat 2 thing and i don't think there were any bat 1 / bat 2 RHD cars. but this is a question for @NiekN or @Wes

Engine VIN is 2285087 but yeah it seems most likely it’s a 3.0 from my limited understanding

Here you go.

Good morning @blibliki & @rsporsche ,

Apologies for the late reply to your conversation—for some reason, my email notifications don't work very well.

Anyway, regarding your CSL parts, I suspect they would indeed be of interest to a CSL owner, and I shall send a message to those on my list. Now, there's a slight confusion on my end regarding the numbers you've mentioned. The engine VIN 2285087 is indeed listed against a burned-out car; I wasn't aware the parts still existed, so thank you for letting me know. The other VIN, 2285194, that car is listed here as broken, and the internals are currently in a UK-based CSL. Am I correct in understanding the latter is not the car we're talking about?

Regarding the bat question, you're correct in saying there were no phase 2 RHD bats. The only RHD CSLs were all phase 1, with the added citypack. I would assume it's a 3.0 unless it's been modified since production.

Kind regards,
Niek

Hi Niek, you’re correct, the latter isn’t the car we’re taking about. The parts in this car are from the burned out 2285087 CSL.

Do you have any other information on 2285087? All I know is anecdotal from the previous owner of the car.

Hi @blibliki , Aside from the info on the interior fire (which I believe came from you), I have no information on the car. Any additional info you have would be appreciated to complete my records. Thank you!
