What is this capped hose?

I have one of these on each side, goes from the space where the windshield wiper mechanism sits down into the engine bay but is capped off. I do not have an AC car - is this where some sort of venting sits? Not sure what purpose these serve otherwise but I’m sure there is a simple explanation.

Quack…

The duck bill drain hose.

Lets rain water out of the firewall area that comes in from the vents on your hood while minimizing the amount of engine bay hot air and fumes that can get sucked into your heater blower fan to the interior of your car.

Important item!

I have extended this drain hose to under the motor compartment. So rainwater doesn’t get in to the small area of the frame or into the beam’s. Some rust prevention!

It's a simple drain hose. It shouldn't be closed and should have a tiny slit at the bottom.

All good to know, I’ll check it. For various reasons I have relocated battery to trunk and in routing a positive cable to the front I was going to follow the lead of others and put an easily accessible positive terminal along the firewall. This seemed like a way to have that terminal sit in that otherwise-unused passenger side windshield wiper bay but I didn’t know what the hose was doing. May mount that terminal on the engine side then, or if I do pass through the hose I’ll use a rubber grommet to keep it watertight. That option makes sense and I think it’s what others have done but just feels a bit odd to me.

i know that Carl Nelson used to stock this snorkle hose. you might want to check with him to avoid the tariff / high shipping

Any opening in the hose allows gas fumes into the cabin.
Yes, that was my concern so will NOT go that route. Last thing I need is gas fumes. I also need to figure out what I’m doing with the plastic vent canister in the trunk - currently I have the tubing that runs to the canister and then back to the fuel tank area as well as the line running to the charcoal canister in the front of the vehicle. I haven't yet explored what parts of this are necessary, which parts are from the Euro nature of the vehicle vs making it US spec, etc. I don't mind keeping the canister there if it cuts down on fumes, but I know that some have removed it and routed fumes elsewhere.
