Visiting San Francisco - recommendations welcome :-)

Dear friends in E9 passion and pain,

I am going to go to San Francisco for business in early January. Unfortunately, I will stay for only 4-5 days, will spend most of the time in the Moscone building and will not have a rental car available.
Nevertheless, I will at least be able to e.g. plan some of my dinners independently and I would be happy about some recommendations from locals where to go for a drink and a nice burger, steak or similar :) I learned a lot for my next trip to Chicago from a recent discussion here so I thought I also ask for this trip :)

there are a ton of great places to eat not too far from Moscone (reasonable walk) ... a few of my casual favorites
Tadisch seafood grille (California st near Battery st)
Perbacco (italian - california st)
La Mar Cocina (peruvian seafood = next to the ferry terminal)
noshing at the Ferry Terminal - Gotts is a favorite
chinatown - great chinese (i don't know names)

i will think of a few others, but i know some of the locals will have a few thoughts.
 
I just visited San Francisco last week, to visit friends and take in the "its Christmastime in the city" thing. Someone recommended Sam's Tavern to me as an old-time restaurant that harkens back to the days of Sam Spade and Nick & Nora Charles. The restaurant has mature, well dressed waiters (and patrons) and a full bar. Try to get a booth for the full experience, though they were all taken the day we were there.

Sam's is located at 368 Bush Street, a few blocks north of Moscone (Google says it's a 15 min walk) and near Union Square. Their matchboxes give the number as GArfield 1 - 0594 (you're just supposed to know that the area code is 415).

Not having a car in SF should not be an impediment; street parking is impossible on the Moscone side of the city and if you can find a space, your car will get broken into. Still, locals tell me that the city has gotten better since Dan Lurie became mayor.

Seems like I could take a walk to the Ferry Terminal; as I am travelling alone Gott's concept could offer some chance for conversation.
And I appreciate the possibility for 10 different beers on draft at Sam's :)
Maybe I can make use of the Happy Hour at Perbacco :)

Which local breweries/beers I should not miss?
Read about Barebottle, Black Hammer, Loughing Monk? I think there is Fort Point also in the Ferry buliding?

one of the cool thing about Tadisch's is there is 'counter' dining ... its a great seat where you watch some of the cooking and talk to the waiter like a bartender. they also have great drinks. Gotts is cool, it started out in St. Helena (Napa Valley) - great burgers, but the grilled ahi tuna burger is out of this world.
 
I worked in the city for about 20 years and there are so many great restaurants.

South of Market for Chinese, I had a great business lunch at Fang, their family owns another hole in the wall restaurant called House of Nanking. Not as nice a place as Fang, but the food is good.

Scoma's in the warf as mentioned by @lip277 is a favorite, the chiopino is very good and of course you have to have it with plenty of San Francisco sourdough bread.

I did not find the Buena Vista cafe to be worth the visit, we were there about a year ago and didn't enjoy it.
 
I've just been to Burma Superstar on Clement. Wow. (sshhh, don't tell anyone) (waitaminute, 3800 google reviews, nevermind)

House of Prime Rib is incredible BUT!

keep in mind, reservations are made way in advance. As of the moment, reservations are booked through July 2026

You can buy a reservation online for $150.00…….

Suggest you visit the sf chronicle website…. And don’t forget to get a burrito from the Mission!


 
Guys, that is plenty of valuable input - thank you so much, I love it!
I will dive into it until I reach SF second week of January and will try to make the best of the limited leisure time I will have there! I always try to use these opportunities to collect some great moments, despite the trips are for business reasons; looking very much forward to it.

I recommend using a self driving Waymo car/taxi. Nice jaguar suv

Toronado-dive bar most beers on tap in SF
Fort point beer is good
Southern pacific brewery. Cool with trees inside

Union square for shopping
Golden Gate Park is amazing
The presidio
Alcatraz

Don, you are refering to the 41st Coupe Treffen organized by the German Coupe Club in Northeim mid of May?
Not sure yet if it aligns with job and family but I would definitely be interested in attending. I planned to attend last year when it took place in Bad Soden ("around the corner" from where I am currently living) but then our family holiday covered exactly those days...
Will you be there?
