Speedo cable into gearbox

C an anyone tell me what i am missing to secure the cable into the gearbox

You also need the mating gear that is hopefully in the transmission. It fits in with the gear on right side of boonies photo

I realised I had an old getrag gearbox and the shaft is still in it. However its solid in there. Any suggestions on getting it out

Heat, lots of penetrating oil, slowly working/spinning it if it lets up at all. Might be able to get a small flathead through the thru-bolt hole and pry a bit?
