My fuel pump is mounted on the frame rail under the voltage relay. The metal fuel filter is screwed into the inlet of the fuel pump.
I have removed the pump/filter and want to buy an inline filter I can mount where it is easier to inspect (transparent body) and replace on a yearly basis.
The plastic filters will work, but I would like to have one that can be mounted securely around the battery area, since my battery is in the trunk.

Based on @sfdon’s guidance, I got a metal fuel filter and used a hose bracket to mount it to the edge of the battery tray. There’s a small cutout there to which it can attach.
Here a a picture he sent me a while back showing its mounting location. I too have the battery in the trunk but am using the battery tray area for distribution block so it still made sense to have fuel filter in that location since it fits nicely

Buy a good metal filter like the one above, I use a Tii filter.
part number 13321256425? curious, what is the size? i was going to use a NOS purolator F43178 - its 55mm x 72mm and has 8mm fuel pipes. don't remember which car i bought it for - either the 533i the 2002 or the e30 m3 ...

i like that location and that looks like the same shape as the purolator filter i have (mine is black)

Using Chris' advice,I went to RealOEM and looked up the Tii filter.
Then I went to FCP Euro to see this:
It's a metal filter that fits a bunch of M30 engine applications with the same part #,but there's no remark about the fittings being for 8 mm fuel hose.
FCP Euro has the fuel hose priced by the meter:

I hope a member can confirm that this filter can be used with the 8 mm fuel hose.
And now to find a clamp and a good place to mount it in the empty battery area.

with the C tube injection and the e12 fuel rail 'J' shaped, the fuel pressure regulator is at the front of the engine and this will work well. thanks for posting the pic. i was planning to put the fuel lines on tomorrow morning so you guys perfectly anticipated my needs.

Clarification to above - I wrote the words "fuel pump" in my third sentence, should have been "fuel filter". The fuel pump is obviously way at the back of the car in my CSi. Didn't mean to confuse so sorry if I did so. Daughter's graduation from high school tonight - was distracted!
