Hi guys
I’m just wondering if anyone would know anyone selling a replacement catalytic converter for a 2008 Toyota Prius ?
It’s not for me .
It’s for my nephew. He lives in San Diego and his catalytic converter was stolen from his car last week .
He said his car is only worth about 4K if it had a cat
And he is being quoted 3.5K to get a replacement cat .
He’s not long out of college so I think he’d prefer to try and get his car fixed at a reasonable price if possible.
Any thoughts on where he should go would be great thanks.
I’m in Ireland so unfortunately I’m not much help to him from over here.

Not sure of the particulars, but....
Looking at Oreilly's web site - I see 2008 Prius cats starting at $500 and then 'OEM Grade' for $250...

If that is an option. I suppose one could get it on their own and have a local muffler shop install it???

Just a thought. These cat thefts are a real mess.....

Okay I will pass that info onto him, thanks!
His neighbour’s got footage of it happening on the dash cam in their car. Apparently they were in and out with his cat removed in under 3 minutes.
Thanks again .

Strangely I cannot access the Oreilly’s website.
I think it must know I’m in Europe and I guess they don’t sell to Europe.
I noticed the same thing last year when I was heading to New York on holidays .
I was trying to look at spray painting guns for sale in the states before I headed over and I couldn’t when in Ireland but I could once I was in New York.

My daily beater is an 05 Prius (same gen) and it has a large cover over the cat. Have him search Facebook Marketplace for Prius exhaust. They sell used cats with the exhaust so it's not as obvious since selling used cats is illegal.

Thanks a mill
I’ll pass that on !

My 2009 prius got bipped last week in California. Here's what your nephew need to know:

1) California CARB requires factory original equipment. Those $250 options are not legal here and the
vendors won't even ship them to a CA address. Not clear that the smog check station will lift the car
and examine but why risk it.
2) The Toyota cat/exhaust has factory markings and toyota logos embossed in the steel. I'm supposing if you (I) buy a factory unit (<$1000 on FB) that's complete from flange to exhaust pipe that its legit and not pre-stolen.
3) The cat protection plate on my car did not prevent the theft because it does not cover enough of the system
to prevent getting a makita cutoff tool up in there. I will be buying/making an bigger plate.
4) I will build a protective corral for my car from a 4x8 sheet and under-screwed 10" beams such that those bums can't slide themselves or their jacks under the car. pics to follow.
